The Enclave, all-new in 2008, returns for 2009 with new enhancements, as Buick seeks to elevate the brand's perception among consumers and appeal to a younger, more mainstream audience. The Enclave features styling that differentiates it from the mechanically similar GMC Acadia, Saturn Outlook and Chevy Traverse. More luxurious features and Buick's "QuietTuning" (see explanation below) further set the Enclave apart from competitors. Under its skin, the Enclave shares GM's new crossover SUV architecture, including a V-6 engine, available seating for up to 8, and an emphasis on easy access to the second and third seating rows, plus 115.1 cubic feet of cargo room behind the first row when all rear seats are folded.

Model Lineup
The 2009 Buick Enclave is available in CX or CXL trim levels, both with a choice of front- or all-wheel drive. Standard equipment on the Enclave CX includes tri-zone climate control; stereo with an MP3-capable CD player and XM satellite radio; 18-inch alloy wheels; one-touch power tailgate; premium cloth seats; 6-way power driver seat; power fore-aft adjustment for the front passenger seat; sliding front-row center console armrest; Smart Slide second-row seat; OnStar hands-free communication; auto-dimming rearview mirror; remote keyless entry; Xenon headlights; and cloth seats. On the options list, amenities include seating for 8 passengers; heated and cooled front seats as a stand-alone option; GPS navigation system; XM NavTraffic with real-time traffic reports; rear-seat DVD player; sunroof; remote vehicle starter; articulating headlamps; rear parking assist; and a towing package that increases the Enclave's towing capacity to 4500 pounds. Two new exterior colors are available for 2009: Silver Green Metallic and Quicksilver Metallic.

The Enclave CXL has standard perforated and heated leather seats, with two front bucket seats and second row standard with two captain's chairs. A second-row 60/40-split bench (seating three passengers) is optional. Other CXL standard features include 8-way power driver seat and 4-way power front passenger seat (both heated); and a memory function for the seats, mirrors and (optional) tilt/telescoping steering column. CXL also has standard 19-inch machined or optional 19-inch 7-spoke chrome wheels. Dealer-installed 20-inch wheels are available through Buick Accessories.

The 2009 Buick Enclave is powered by GM's new and more powerful 3.6-liter, 24-valve V-6 engine with dual overhead cams and variable valve timing (VVT). Power output is 13 more hp than last year's model with an SAE-certified 288 hp at 6300 rpm and 270 lb.-ft. of torque at 3400 rpm. The engine is mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission, and buyers can choose FWD or intelligent AWD. EPA fuel economy estimates for the 2009 Enclave are 17 mpg city/24 mpg highway for FWD models, and 16 mpg city/22 mpg highway for AWD models. The Enclave's 4-wheel independent suspension is tuned for a quiet, comfortable ride with car-like response, Buick says.

The 2009 Buick Enclave comes with a comprehensive list of standard safety equipment: six air bags (dual-stage frontal, front-seat-mounted side-impact air bags and two roof rail air bags covering all three seating rows) and rollover-sensing system; front-seat safety belt pre-tensioners; 4-wheel anti-lock disc brakes; tire-pressure monitor; traction control; electronic stability control with rollover mitigation; and panic brake assist feature. All 2009 Buick models, including Enclave, are equipped with OnStar (with one-year Directions & Connections plan), featuring an advanced crash response system with automatic crash notification.

The 2009 Buick Enclave received perfect 5-star ratings in the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's (NHTSA) front- and side-impact crash tests. NHTSA subjected both FWD and AWD versions to its rollover tests, and both earned 4 of 5 stars, putting both versions of the Enclave among the better-performing models in the segment. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has named the Buick Enclave (along with sister nameplates, GMC Acadia, Saturn Outlook and Chevy Traverse) as a 2008 "Top Safety Pick." The achievement comes as a result of the SUV's outstanding performance in the IIHS's front-, side- and rear-impact crash tests, and the fact that the model has standard electronic stability control.

Along with its styling, the 2009 Buick Enclave's quiet ride is among its most-touted features. Buick employs what it calls "QuietTuning," which includes specially laminated windshield glass and laminated safety glass for front doors, triple door seals, and special attention to the hardware components that can generate wind or road noise: the tires, outside rearview mirrors and flat-blade windshield wipers.Another interesting aspect of the Enclave is the easy access it provides for rear-seat passengers. The rear axle is located behind the second-row seat rather than beneath it, allowing the rear doors to have a straight trailing edge, which in turn provides plenty of room for entry and exit. The second-row seats employ GM's SmartSlide feature-tugging on a single lever raises the bottom cushion and moves the seat forward, allowing easier access to the third row.

New Bluetooth for Phone hands-free phone interface, standard on all Enclave models, includes integrated steering-wheel controls. Phone conversations play through the audio system, while voice recognition interprets voice commands to dial phone numbers and name tags. XM NavTraffic delivers real-time traffic information to the Enclave's touch-screen navigation system. OnStar Destination Download provides subscribers with screen-based navigation systems to input destination via a button press. All entertainment packages now include a 110-volt inverter, enabling power for portable electric plug-in devices. For Enclaves not equipped with the navigation system, the enhanced Driver Confidence package now includes a rear backup camera display integrated into the inside rearview mirror.
