About Ratings

The Overall Quality Rating is taken from the Initial Quality Study, which surveys original owners after 90 days of new-vehicle ownership. Ratings are provided at the model level (i.e., BMW 3 Series) and include all trim levels within that model (i.e., BMW 328, 335, 335is, et al). Why are there no ratings for certain models?

For a brand or company to be included in a study and receive a Power Circle Rating, various research criteria that must be met. Accordingly, some models with very low production or sales volumes may not be included in a particular study and, therefore, do not receive a Rating.

Why are Ratings for certain trim levels the same with a model line?

In most cases, the Rating for an entire model line encompasses all trim levels/series, body styles, and engine/transmission combinations for that particular model. For instance, Ratings for the BMW 3 Series represents the entire 3 Series family, including all model variants (i.e. 328i, 335i, 335is, M3), body styles (i.e. sedan, coupe, convertible, wagon), and engine/transmission combinations. To meet research criteria, data for all vehicles within a particular model family are aggregated when calculating the model's Rating.
