BMW's two-seat sports car gets standard tire-pressure monitors for 2007, as well as an auxiliary audio input jack, a new Saddle Brown interior leather option, and the Premium option package now includes a 4-year subscription to BMW Assist.
BMW launched its two-seat Z3 roadster as a 1996 model. Later, it added a high-performance and fixed-roof coupe specially prepared by the automaker's M motorsports division (which offers high-performance variants of BMW vehicles). For 2003, BMW redesigned and re-engineered the sports car and renamed it the Z4.
For 2007, BMW's two-seat sports car is available as a Z4 3.0i roadster, 3.0si roadster, 3.0si coupe, and as a much higher-performance Z4 M roadster and Z4 M coupe. The 3.0i is powered by BMW's 215-hp, 3.0-liter inline 6-cylinder engine while the 3.0si versions get a 255-hp version of the same engine. The M versions get 330-hp engines.
Every Z4 has a firmly planted suspension, standard run-flat performance tires, and advanced stability-enhancing electronics technology. Inside, the driver and passenger can enjoy the Z4's sportiness while also having access to the typical BMW comfort, convenience, and safety features, including side air bags.
The BMW Z4 competes in the Compact Premium Sporty segment, which consists of eight models. Buyers in this segment look for exterior styling, performance, and quality, according to the J.D. Power and Associates 2006 Avoider StudySM and the Escaped Shopper Study.SM
The top sellers in the segment during calendar year 2006, according to the J.D. Power and Associates Sales Report, SM were the Nissan 350Z (24,635 units sold), the now-discontinued Acura RSX (16,996), and Mercedes-Benz CLK-Class (16,415). The BMW Z4 sold 12,284 units in 2006, an increase of 22.3 percent compared to the previous year. Other models offered in the Compact Premium Sporty segment include the Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class, Porsche Cayman, Honda S2000, and Porsche Boxster. Joining the segment in 2007 is the Volvo C70.
