BMW's largest SUV gets a big boost in performance with the arrival of the 555-horsepower X5 M model tuned with the enthusiast in mind. The rest of the lineup benefits from the next-generation infotainment upgrade, reconfigured options, and standard HD radio.

The 2010 BMW X5 is a five-passenger luxury crossover SUV that emphasizes dynamic handling and ride smoothness, according to the automaker. BMW introduced the X5 in 1999, effectively establishing the crossover SUV segment. For 2010, BMW has added the X5 M model, which is an ultra-high-performance variation.

The BMW X5 comes in three trim levels: xDrive35d, xDrive30i, and xDrive48i. They differ as to engine type, but standard equipment and options packages are virtually identical for all three. On all X5 models, the iDrive system has been simplified, with new on-screen menus and various shortcuts.

Dual-zone automatic climate control is standard, while four-zone control is optional. The standard audio system includes 12 speakers, two underseat woofers, and optimized speaker configuration. Bluetooth connectivity is available. Options include a Premium Sound package, high-definition radio, SIRIUS Satellite Radio, and a rear seat entertainment system. Leatherette upholstery is standard and Nevada leather and Nappa leather are options. The X5 M features many of the above options as standard equipment.

The BMW X5M is powered by a twin-turbocharged 555-hp, 4.4-liter V8 engine that sends 501 lb.-ft. of torque to all four wheels. It also features a six-speed automatic transmission with manual shift paddles. According to EPA estimates, it delivers 12 mpg city, 17 mpg highway, and 14 mpg combined. The xDrive35d trim level offers a diesel engine (emissions compliant in all 50 states) that provides 265 hp and 425 lb.-ft. of torque. Its fuel consumption is 19 mpg city and 25 mpg highway.

Other engines include the 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder in the X5 xDrive30i, which provides 260 hp, 225 lb.-ft. of torque. It offers EPA-estimated fuel economy of 15 mpg city, 21 mpg highway, and 18 mpg combined. Also available is the 4.8-liter V8 in the X5 xDrive48i, which provides 350 hp and 350 lb.-ft. and delivers EPA fuel economy of 14 mpg city, 19 mpg highway, and 16 mpg combined.

In NHTSA impact tests, the X5 scored the maximum five stars for frontal-impact driver protection, four stars for frontal-impact passenger protection, and five stars for front and rear side protection. The IIHS gave the X5 a "Good" rating in frontal-offset and side-impact crash tests.
