The BMW X5 is a midsize sport utility vehicle that was originally introduced in 1999 as the automaker's first truck model. Now in its second generation (last redesigned for the 2006 model year), the X5 was significantly updated for the 2010 model year with new front and rear fascias. For 2011, BMW has upgraded the engine choices and introduced a new 8-speed automatic transmission on most models.

The2011 BMW X5 Series is sold in four different models: xDrive35i, xDrive50i, xDrive35d, and X5 M. Standard models are fitted with vinyl seat upholstery, dual-zone climate control, full power accessories, cruise control, adaptive Xenon headlights, 18-inch alloy wheels, and more. While BMW has two pre-packaged X5 models this year (xDrive35i Premium and xDrive35i Sport Activity), all share the same major option groups including the Premium package (power tailgate, Bluetooth phone connectivity, lumbar support, and more); Sport package (20-inch alloy wheels, sport steering wheel, sport seats, and anthracite headliner); Technology package (navigation, voice command, park distance control, rear camera, and more); and Rear Climate package (tinted glass, rear sunshades and 4-zone temperature control). The X5 M is designed for driving enthusiasts. It has a lowered suspension with oversized tires, sport suspension, sporty interior components, and a painted body kit.

The 2011 BMW X5 Series offers buyers a choice between four different engines. The standard power plant under the hood of the xDrive35i is a turbocharged, 3.0-liter 6-cylinder engine rated at 300 horsepower. The xDrive35d features a diesel-powered, turbocharged, 3.0-liter 6-cylinder engine rated at 265 horsepower. The xDrive50i is fitted with a twin-turbocharged, 4.4-liter 8-cylinder engine rated at 400 horsepower. The X5 M boasts a twin-turbocharged, 4.4-liter 8-cylinder engine rated at 555 horsepower. Standard gasoline-powered models have a new 8-speed transmission, while the diesel is fitted with a 6-speed gearbox. The X5 M has a special high-performance 6-speed gearbox. All-wheel drive (xDrive) is standard on all models. The EPA rates the fuel economy of the 2011 BMW X5 between 12 mpg city and 26 mpg highway, depending on powertrain.

The 2011 BMW X5 xDrive35i starts at a base price of around $48,000 and tops out with the X5 M, which starts at around $87,000.
