Exterior Features
The 2013 BMW X5 is offered in xDrive35i, xDrive35d, xDrive50i, and X5 M model series. Additionally, the X5 xDrive35i is available in base, Premium and Sport Activity trim levels.

Standard equipment for the base X5 xDrive35i includes 18-inch aluminum wheels, automatic xenon adaptive headlights, LED corona ring running lights, fog lights, adaptive brake lights, rain-sensing wipers, and heated washer jets.

Interior Features
The 2013 BMW X5 xDrive35i comes standard with leatherette seats, 10-way power front seats, push-button ignition, and dual-zone automatic climate control. Bluetooth is standard, as well as iDrive control and a 205-watt stereo with 10 speakers, CD/MP3 player, auxiliary audio input jack, USB/iPod connection, HD Radio, and satellite radio.

Optional Features
The X5 xDrive35i Premium is equipped with 19-inch wheels, leather seats, heated front seats, power tilt/telescoping steering wheel, wood interior trim, ambient interior lighting, dark-tinted rear privacy glass, and a panoramic sunroof. Additionally, this model offers a power tailgate, front and rear park-assist sensors, and auto-dimming interior and exterior mirrors.

The X5 xDrive Sport Activity model adds 20-inch wheels, Shadowline exterior trim, sport steering wheel, manual front-seat thigh support adjusters, Anthracite headliner, and an increased top speed.

The X5 xDrive35d is equipped like the Premium model, but it does not include the power tilt/telescoping steering wheel or the 19-inch wheels.

The X5 xDrive50i is equipped like the Premium model, and it adds a navigation system.

The BMW X5 M includes high-performance mechanical components, 20-way multi-contour front sport seats, premium leather upholstery with an extended leather treatment, 600-watt premium sound system, and special trim inside and out.

A Convenience package for the base xDrive35i includes power soft-close doors, panoramic sunroof, auto-dimming mirrors, ambient lighting, and wood trim. For the Premium and Sport Activity versions, the Convenience package includes Comfort Access keyless entry, power soft-close doors, 4-zone automatic climate control, rear side window sunshades, navigation, reversing camera, and a universal garage door opener. These contents are grouped into the Premium package for the xDrive35d and xDrive50i models.

All X5 models except the base xDrive35i can be equipped with the Cold Weather package (heated rear seats, heated steering wheel, headlight washers, ski bag) and the Premium Sound package (16-speaker premium audio system, satellite radio).

All X5 models except the base xDrive35i and the X5 M can be equipped with the Luxury Seating package (20-way power multi-contour ventilated front seats, perforated leather) and the Technology package (head-up display, side-view cameras, automatic high beams).

The Sport Activity package for the xDrive35d and xDrive50i includes 19-inch wheels, 10-way power sport seats (xDrive35d), 20-way multi-contour power sport seats (xDrive50i), power tilt/telescoping sport steering wheel, Anthracite headliner, and Shadowline exterior trim.

An M Sport package for the X5 xDrive35i Sport Activity adds unique wheels and performance tires, sport suspension, M Sport steering wheel, M Aerodynamics body kit, xenon adaptive headlights, leather/Alcantara sport seats, and unique trim.

For the X5 xDrive50i, the M Sport package adds 19-inch wheels, performance tires, self-leveling suspension, 20-way power multi-contour sport seats, M Sport steering wheel, M Aerodynamics body kit, xenon adaptive headlights, Shadowline exterior trim, Anthracite headliner, and an increased top speed.

The X5 xDrive35i Sport Activity and X5 xDrive50i can also be equipped with an M Performance package that adds extra horsepower, shifter paddles, and stainless steel pedals.

The high-performance X5 M is offered exclusively with an Active Ventilated Seat package (ventilated front seats, perforated leather, active driver's seat bolstering); Driver Assistance package (head-up display, automatic high beams, reversing camera); and a Rear Climate package (4-zone automatic climate control, rear side window sunshades).

Options are also offered separately, and depending on model, these are the highlights: third-row seat, rear-seat entertainment system, full LED lighting, Active Steering, Active Cruise Control, Adaptive Drive with Active Roll Stabilization, and lane-departure warning.

Under the Hood
The X5 xDrive35i is equipped with a turbocharged, 3.0-liter 6-cylinder engine that delivers 300 horsepower (315 with M Performance package) and 300 lb.-ft. of torque. An 8-speed automatic transmission is standard, and all X5 models are equipped with xDrive all-wheel drive.

The X5 xDrive35d offers a 3.0-liter, 6-cylinder turbo-diesel engine generating 265 horsepower and 425 lb.-ft. torque. It is paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission.

The X5 xDrive50i features a twin turbocharged, 4.4-liter V-8 engine that generates 400 horsepower (430 with M Performance package) and 450 lb.-ft. of torque, powering all four wheels through an 8-speed automatic transmission.

The BMW X5 M has a twin turbocharged, 4.4-liter V-8 engine producing 555 horsepower and 500 lb.-ft. of torque, and this model is equipped with a 6-speed M Sport automatic transmission.

Fuel Economy
EPA fuel-economy estimates for the 2013 BMW X5 are:

  • X5 xDrive35i: 16/23/19 mpg (city/highway/combined)
  • X5 xDrive35d: 19/26/22 mpg (2012 rating)
  • X5 xDrive50i: 14/20/16 mpg
  • X5 M: 12/17/14 mpg

Safety
The 2013 BMW X5 is equipped with 6 air bags, traction and stability control, hill-start assist and hill-descent control, and a 4-wheel ventilated disc anti-lock braking system with brake fade compensation, brake drying, brake stand-by, and adaptive brake light features. BMW Assist telematics with 4 years of Automatic Collision Notification service is also standard.

Safety-related options include front and rear park-assist sensors, exterior cameras, Active Cruise Control, lane-departure warning, and automatic high beam headlights.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) gives the 2013 BMW X5 a 4-star overall crash-test rating (out of 5 stars), but the frontal-impact test result for both the driver and the front-seat passenger rates only 3 stars.

As this overview is written, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has not rated the 2013 BMW X5.
