- Navigation system now standard on the xDrive50i model
The BMW X5 is a midsize SUV equipped with 18-inch alloy wheels (upgradable to 19 or 20 inches) and adaptive Xenon headlights. The X5 M trim features a lower suspension, premium wheels, and distinctive body treatments.
The 2012 BMW X5 Series is available in four variations: xDrive35i, xDrive50i, xDrive35d, and X5 M. Standard models feature push-button ignition, vinyl upholstery, dual-zone climate control, full power accessories, cruise control, adaptive Xenon headlights, 12-speaker sound system, Bluetooth connectivity, and emergency telematics. The xDrive50i features a 16-speaker sound system, navigation system, larger engine, and 75 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats folded down.
All 2012 X5s share the same major options, which are offered primarily as packages. Some stand-alone features are available, including adaptive suspension, active steering, adaptive cruise control, keyless entry, 4-zone climate control, many upgrades to front and rear seats, and a rear-seat entertainment system.
Under the Hood
The 2012 BMW X5 Series offers a choice of four engines. The xDrive35i is fitted with a turbocharged, 3.0-liter 6-cylinder engine rated at 300 horsepower. The xDrive35d features a diesel-powered, turbocharged, 3.0-liter 6-cylinder engine rated at 265 horsepower. The xDrive50i comes with a twin turbocharged, 4.4-liter 8-cylinder engine delivering 400 horsepower. The X5 M is powered by a twin turbocharged, 4.4-liter 8-cylinder engine rated at 555 horsepower. Standard gaso; the diesel has a 6-speed transmission; the X5 M features a high-performance 6-speed gearbox. All-wheel drive (xDrive) is standard on all models.
EPA fuel-economy figures for the 2012 BMW X5 are:
- xDrive35i: 16/23/19 mpg (city/highway/combined)
- xDrive50i: 14/20/16 mpg
- xDrive35d: 19/26/22 mpg
- X5 M: 12/17/14 mpg
Standard safety features on the 2012 BMW X5 include anti-lock disc brakes, front-seat side air bags, side curtain air bags, and emergency telematics. Many other safety features are optional.
In government crash tests conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the BMW X5 received 4 (out of 5) stars for rollover resistance, and other ratings were unavailable at the time of posting. To date, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has not conducted safety tests on the 2012 BMW X5.
