The 2013 BMW X1 is a new subcompact crossover SUV, and is the least expensive BMW sold in the United States. It is offered in X1 sDrive28i, X1 xDrive28i, and X1 xDrive35i model series, with a choice between standard, xLine, Sport, and M Sport trim lines.
Standard equipment on the X1 sDrive28i includes 17-inch aluminum wheels, fog lights, roof rails, rain-sensing wipers, automatic headlights, and LED brake lights. The X1 xDrive28i offers standard all-wheel drive.Interior Features
Inside, the 2013 BMW X1 sDrive28i and xDrive28i are equipped with leatherette upholstery, 8-way manually adjustable front seats, automatic climate control, tilt/telescoping steering wheel, Bluetooth connectivity, and an 8-speaker stereo with a CD/MP3 player, auxiliary audio input jack, USB/iPod connection, and HD Radio.
With the rear seat in use, the BMW X1 provides a minimum of 14.8 cubic feet of cargo space. Fold the rear seat, and the X1 holds 47.7 cubic feet of cargo.Optional Features
The BMW X1 xDrive35i adds all-wheel drive, a more powerful turbocharged 6-cylinder engine, 18-inch aluminum wheels, adaptive xenon headlights with LED corona ring driving lights, headlight washers, panoramic sunroof, 8-way power front seats, and unique wood cabin trim. It also swaps the 8-speed automatic transmission for a 6-speed unit.
There are three extra-cost trim lines available: xLine, Sport and M Sport.
The X1 xLine is an off-road-themed trim line, equipped with matte silver grille, bumper and rocker panel trim, high gloss Dark Copper interior accents, Y-spoke 18-inch aluminum wheels, and exclusive leather and cabin trim selections.
The X1 Sport trim line adds double-spoke 18-inch aluminum wheels, 8-way power front sport seats, and high-gloss Black interior trim. The M Sport trim line includes an M Sport aerodynamic body kit, unique staggered-width 18-inch wheels wearing performance tires, sport suspension, Shadowline exterior trim, M Sport leather-wrapped steering wheel with paddle shifters, Anthracite headliner, and dark crosshatch aluminum cabin accents.
Individual options for the X1 are primarily grouped into packages. The Premium package adds Nevada leather, 8-way power front seats, Comfort Access keyless entry, panoramic sunroof, auto-dimming rearview mirror with compass, auto-dimming side mirrors, and a universal garage door opener. The Technology package contains a navigation system and BMW Assist telematics service with 4 free years of the Safety Plan. The Driver Assistance package provides a reversing camera and park-assist sensors. The Ultimate package contains all of these features.
BMW also offers X1 buyers a Cold Weather package (heated front seats, heated steering wheel, headlight washers) and a Lighting package (adaptive xenon headlights, LED corona-ring running lights, automatic high beam headlights, ambient cabin lighting).
Additional options include metallic paint, BMW Apps smartphone integration, 340-watt premium surround-sound audio system, and satellite radio.Under the Hood
The BMW X1 sDrive28i and xDrive28i are equipped with a turbocharged, 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine generating 240 horsepower between 5,000 and 6,500 rpm, and 260 lb.-ft. of torque between 1,250 rpm and 4,800 rpm. An 8-speed automatic transmission drives the rear or all four wheels, and this engine includes automatic stop/start technology to help conserve fuel.
The BMW X1 xDrive35i offers a turbocharged, 3.0-liter 6-cylinder engine generating 300 horsepower at 5,800 rpm and 300 lb.-ft. of torque between 1,300 rpm and 5,000 rpm. It is paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission and xDrive all-wheel drive.Fuel Economy
EPA fuel-economy estimates for the 2013 BMW X1 are:

- X1 xDrive28i: 22/33/26 mpg

The 2013 BMW X1 is equipped with 6 air bags, traction control, stability control, hill-start assist, automatic headlights, and rain-sensing wipers. The standard 4-wheel ventilated disc anti-lock braking system features brake drying, brake stand-by, and brake fade compensation technologies.
Safety-related options for the X1 include adaptive xenon headlights, auto-dimming headlights, reversing camera, and front and rear park-assist sensors. The X1 also offers BMW Assist telematics with Automatic Collision Notification service, which can speed rescue in the event of an air bag deployment.
As this overview is written, neither the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) nor the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has performed crash tests on the 2013 BMW X1.
