The 2012 BMW 7 Series is a 5-passenger luxury sedan available in five trim levels, including three Li designations for an extended-wheelbase body style. Standard features include 18-inch wheels, adaptive suspension dampers, front and rear parking sensors, adaptive Xenon headlights, and fog lights.
Standard equipment on the 2012 BMW 7 Series includes a rearview camera; sunroof; auto-dimming mirrors; heated power-adjustable front seats; driver memory functions; power tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel; 4-zone climate control; leather upholstery; keyless ignition; and an infotainment system featuring navigation system with real-time traffic, emergency telematics, Bluetooth connectivity, and a 12-speaker audio system.
Most options for higher trim levels are bundled into groups. The Premium Sound package upgrades to a 16-speaker sound system and adds satellite radio, among other features. The Cold Weather package includes a heated steering wheel. The Driver Assistance package adds lane-departure warning and blind-spot monitoring systems, among other options.
Under the Hood
The 2012 BMW 7 Series is offered in a variety of powertrains. The 740i and 740Li are powered by a 3.0-liter, twin turbo, inline 6-cylinder engine, rated at 315 horsepower, that is mated with a 6-speed automatic transmission. The 750i and 750Li are fitted with a 4.4-liter, twin turbo V-8 engine delivering 400 horsepower that is paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission as standard. The 750 models can be equipped with optional all-wheel drive. The 760Li has a 6.0-liter, twin-turbo V-12 engine that generates 535 horsepower that is mated with an 8-speed automatic transmission.
The 750i and 750Li models are available in hybrid versions. The ActiveHybrid 7 Series is powered by a hybrid powertrain including a 4.4-liter direct-injected and turbocharged V-8 engine delivering a combined 455 horsepower.
BMW emphasizes the performance of the 7 Series with such features as Driving Dynamics Control, which allows the driver to choose among four settings that calibrate the transmission, suspension, and other components.
EPA fuel-economy figures for the BMW 7 Series are:
- 7 Series with 3.0-liter engine: 17/25/20 mpg (city/highway/combined)
- 7 Series with 4.4.-liter engine: 15/22/17 mpg
- 7 Series with 6.0-liter engine: 13/29/15 mpg
- ActiveHybrid 7 Series: 17/24/20 mpg
Standard safety features on the 2012 BMW 7 Series include stability and traction control and a battery of air bags, while optional features include adaptive cruise control and infrared night vision with pedestrian detection.
To date, neither the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) nor the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) have conducted crash tests on the 2012 BMW 7 Series.
