Exterior Features
The 2012 BMW 6 Series is a 2-door luxury car offered in either coupe or soft-top convertible body styles, and is available in three trim levels.
Interior Features
The 2012 BMW 6 Series seats 4 and provides 16.2 cubic feet of trunk space in its coupe variant and 12.4 cubic feet in the convertible model. Lowering the convertible's roof reduces trunk space to 10.6 cubic feet. The base model 640i comes equipped with a navigation system, Bluetooth connectivity, audio system with CD player, leather upholstery, power front seats, and keyless entry. The 650i adds upgraded power seats and premium leather upholstery.
Optional Features
Most options for the 2012 6 Series are bundled into packages. The Driver Assistance package adds side- and top-view cameras, lane-departure warning, and blind-spot detection. The Cold Weather package includes heated front seats and steering wheel, while the Premium Sound package upgrades the standard audio system with a 16-speaker Bang & Olufsen system featuring satellite radio and iPod interface. Stand-alone options include LED headlights, 20-inch wheels, and an infrared night-vision display.
Under the Hood
The base model 640i is equipped with a 3.0-liter, turbocharged, inline 6-cylinder engine rated at 315 horsepower, while the 650i model is fitted with a 4.4-liter, twin-turbo V-8 engine rated at 400 horsepower. An 8-speed Sport Automatic transmission comes standard on the 640i and as an option on the 650i, which includes as standard a 6-speed manual gearbox. The 650i xDrive Coupe and the 650i xDrive Convertible trim levels upgrade to all-wheel drive (AWD) and the 8-speed automatic transmission.
Fuel Economy
EPA fuel-economy figures for the 2012 BMW 6 Series are:
- 640i with 6-cylinder engine: 21-23/31-33/25-26 mpg (city/highway/combined)
- 650i with V-8 engine: 15/22-23/17-18 mpg
- 650i xDrive AWD with V-8 engine: 15/20/17 mpg
Safety
Standard safety features of note on the 2012 BMW 6 Series include active front-seat head restraints, front knee air bags, and pop-up roll bars (convertible only).
To date, neither the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) nor the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) have conducted crash tests on the 2012 BMW 6 Series.
