Exterior Features
The 2013 BMW 6 Series is available in 2-door coupe, 4-door coupe, or 2-door convertible body styles. The 4-door is called the Gran coupe, and is covered in a separate overview.

The 2013 6 Series coupe and 6 Series Convertible are 2+2 grand touring cars, offered as 640i and 650i models, the latter available with an optional xDrive all-wheel-drive system. Standard equipment includes xenon adaptive headlights with corona-ring running lights and adaptive light control, LED fog lights, adaptive brake lights, rain-sensing wipers, heated power-folding exterior mirrors with auto-dimming glass, and 18-inch aluminum wheels. The hood and doors are constructed of aluminum, while the front fenders, roof and decklid are made of reinforced composite material.

The 6 Series Convertible offers a vertical glass rear window that is separate from the power cloth top, meaning that it can be powered down while the top is raised to create flow-through ventilation, or it can be powered up while the top is down to serve as a wind blocker.

A reversing camera is standard, and its lens is hidden behind the rear BMW badge, which pivots out of the way when the car is backing up to allow the camera an unobstructed view of what's behind the car. Front and rear park-assist sensors are also standard.

Interior Features
The 2013 BMW 6 Series models are equipped with leather upholstery and genuine wood trim. In convertibles, the leather includes sun-reflective technology to keep the seat surfaces cooler when the car is parked in the sun with the top down.

BMW's iDrive control system is installed in the 6 Series, and includes a high-resolution screen with trans-reflective technology (TFT). Also standard are navigation with real-time traffic information, Bluetooth connectivity, BMW Assist telematics with a Safety Plan subscription, and a 205-watt audio system with a CD/MP3 player, HD Radio, and satellite radio.

A leather-wrapped, power tilt/telescoping Sport steering wheel (with paddle shifters on models with the automatic transmission), 10-way power front seats with memory and 3-stage heating, and ambient cabin lighting are included in every 6 Series model, as well as Comfort Access keyless entry with push-button ignition, dual-zone automatic climate control, and, on 6 Series coupes, a glass panel roof that tilts up for ventilation.

Optional Features
The 650i offers a more powerful engine, 19-inch aluminum wheels, premium leather upholstery, 20-way power multi-contour front seats, and a premium surround-sound audio system. The 650i is also the only 6 Series model offered with xDrive all-wheel drive.

Options are mainly bundled into packages. BMW offers a Cold Weather package (heated steering wheel and a trunk pass-through with a ski bag); Lighting package (full LED headlights, automatic high-beams); and an Executive package (soft-close doors, ventilated front seats, head-up display, BMW Apps smartphone integration, premium surround-sound audio for 640i, 20-way power multi-contour front seats for 640i, power rear sunshade for 650i coupe, extended leather for 650i, ceramic controls for 650i).

A BMW Individual Composition Program is also available, combining premium extended leather with exclusive wheel designs, interior trims, and other design and detail attributes. The M Sport package adds upgraded 19-inch wheels, Shadowline exterior trim, M Sport steering wheel, Alcantara headliner (coupe), and an aerodynamic body kit. A Driver Assistance package is also available, including a lane-departure warning system, Active Blind Spot Detection, Top View with Side View cameras, and a Speed Limit Info Display.

In addition to these option packages, the 2012 BMW 6 Series can be outfitted with a Bang & Olufsen premium surround-sound audio system, extended leather treatment, active front seats, Adaptive Drive with Active Roll Stabilization, Active Cruise Control with stop-and-go capability, Night Vision with Pedestrian Detection, Parking Assistant system, Integral Active Steering, and BMW Apps technology.

Under the Hood
The 2013 BMW 640i is powered by a turbocharged, 3.0-liter, inline 6-cylinder engine generating 315 horsepower between 5,800 rpm and 6,000 rpm, and 332 lb.-ft. of torque between 1,400 rpm and 4,500 rpm. A fuel-saving automatic start/stop system is included on the 640i, which is driven exclusively by its rear wheels through an 8-speed Sport automatic transmission with shifter paddles on the steering wheel.

The 2013 BMW 650i has a twin-turbocharged, 4.4-liter V-8 engine under its hood, generating 400 horsepower between 5,500 rpm and 6,400 rpm and 450 lb.-ft. of torque between 1,750 rpm and 4,500 rpm. BMW's xDrive all-wheel-drive system is optional on the 650i, and it includes hill-descent control.

The 2013 BMW 6 Series is equipped with standard Driving Dynamics Control with ECO PRO, offering Eco, Comfort, Normal, Sport, and Sport+ settings.

Fuel Economy
EPA fuel-economy estimates for the 2013 BMW 6 Series are:

  • 640i Convertible: 20/30/24 mpg
  • 650i coupe/Convertible: 17/25/19 mpg

Safety
BMW equips the 2013 6 Series with front air bags, seat-mounted head and thorax side-impact air bags, and knee air bags for front-seat occupants. Four-wheel vented disc anti-lock brakes with Cornering Brake Control, Dynamic Brake Control, start-off assistant, brake drying, and brake-fade compensation are also standard, along with a traction and stability control system. Xenon adaptive headlights help to see around dark corners at night, and the 6 Series Convertible includes a rollover protection system.

Optional safety equipment is primarily bundled into the Driver Assistance package in the form of automatic high-beam headlights, Lane Departure Warning, Active Blind Spot Detection, and Top View with Side View cameras. Additionally, the 6 Series is offered with Parking Assistant, Active Cruise Control, and Night Vision with Pedestrian Detection technologies.

As this overview is written, neither the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) nor the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has performed crash tests on the 2013 BMW 6 Series.
