Exterior Features
The 2012 BMW 5 Series is a mid, 4-door luxury sedan, now in its sixth generation. It's offered in four trim levels: 528i, 535i, 550i, and the new M5. The M5 includes special exterior styling enhancements.

Interior Features
All 2012 BMW 5 Series models feature a long list of standard equipment, including full power accessories, dual-zone climate control, and alloy wheels. Vinyl upholstery is standard on the 528i and 535i, with leather standard on the 550i and the M5. The M5 features Merino leather and a host of exclusive styling touches. Trunk capacity is 14 cubic feet.

Optional Features
The BMW 5 Series is offered with several large equipment packages. These add such features as upgraded upholstery, larger alloy wheels, sport-tuned suspension, high-fidelity audio, automatic parallel parking, 4-zone climate control, rear-seat entertainment system, navigation system, active cruise control, Integral Active Steering, and much more.

Under the Hood
New for 2012 on the 528i trim is a turbocharged, 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine rated at 240 horsepower and 260 lb.-ft. of torque. An 8-speed automatic transmission and rear-wheel drive (RWD) are standard; all-wheel drive (AWD) is optional. The 535i trim features a turbocharged, 3.0-liter V-6 engine rated at 300 horsepower and 300 lb.-ft. of torque; the RWD version is available with a 6-speed manual transmission as an alternative to the automatic. The 550i is fitted with a 4.4-liter V-8 engine rated at 400 horsepower and 450 lb.-ft. of torque, while the M5's 4.4-liter V-8 engine delivers 560 horsepower between 6,000-7,000 rpm and 502 lb.-ft. of torque.

Fuel Economy
EPA fuel-economy estimates for the 2012 BMW 5 Series are:
  • 528i with RWD: 23/34/27 mpg (city/highway/combined)
    • 5351 with RWD: 21/31/25 mpg
      • 550i with RWD: 15/23/18 mpg

        Safety
        Standard safety features on the BMW 5 Series include anti-lock disc brakes, front-seat side air bags, side curtain air bags, and an emergency communications system. Other features are bundled with the active cruise control option.

        To date, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has not conducted tests on the 2012 BMW 5 Series. In tests conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), the 5 Series received "Good" ratings--the Institute's highest--in all impact crash-protection tests.
