Now in its sixth generation, the BMW 5 Series is a midsize executive car that competes with comparably sized Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Lexus, and Infiniti models. It's available in Sedan and Gran Turismo body styles, as well as the high-performance M5 variant (see separate overview). Several engines are available, including 4-, 6-, and 8-cylinder turbocharged models, a TwinPower Turbo diesel engine, and a hybrid model.

Models and Features
The BMW 5 Series is available in multiple iterations, including 528i, 528i xDrive, 535i, 535i xDrive, 535d, 535d xDrive, 550i, and 550i xDrive?in either Sedan or Gran Turismo body style?plus the ActiveHybrid sedan. Rear-wheel drive (RWD) is standard on all 5 Series models except those equipped with xDrive, which feature all-wheel drive (AWD). Standard equipment on the base model includes 17-in. wheels, adaptive bi-xenon headlights, sunroof, keyless ignition and entry, dual-zone automatic climate control, 10-way power front seats with driver memory function, leatherette upholstery, adjustable driving settings, and a 10-speaker sound system. The 535i upgrades to 18-in. wheels, leather upholstery, and a 6-cylinder engine, while the 550i adds a V-8 engine, sportier transmission, 20-way adjustable power seats, paddle shifters on the steering wheel, and additional safety features. Many upholstery color options are available. The Gran Turismo body styles offer more headroom and legroom, and a more SUV-like configuration.

Options and Packages
The Cold Weather package includes heated front seats, heated steering wheel, retractable headlight washers, heated rear seats, and the option of upgrading to a wood inlay steering wheel. The Driver Assistance package adds a rear-view camera, head-up display, instrument cluster with extended contents, and park distance control. Driver Assistance Plus includes Active Driving Assistant (upgradable to ACC Stop & Go + Active Driving Assistant), active blind-spot detection, side- and top-view cameras, speed limit information, and a driver assistance package. The Lighting package includes adaptive full LED lights and automatic high beams. The Luxury Seating package adds multi-contour seats, with active ventilated front seats. The Premium package adds a power tailgate, Comfort Access Keyless entry, satellite radio with one-year subscription, and many leather upholstery options. Individual options include a sport automatic transmission with shift paddles, rear-seat entertainment, Harman-Kardon surround-sound system, Bang & Olufsen sound system, concierge services, integral active steering, ceramic controls, heated front seats, park assist, soft-close automatic doors, power rear sunshade with manual rear side window shades, night vision with pedestrian detection, and much more. Other option packages are available on higher trim levels.

Under The Hood
The base standard engine is a 2.0-liter, turbocharged inline 4-cylinder that generates 240 horsepower and which combines a twin-scroll turbocharger with variable valve control and direct injection. The 8-speed automatic transmission features Sport and Manual shift modes and Adaptive Transmission Control (ATC). Non-diesel version of the 535i employ a 3.0-liter, turbo, inline 6-cylinder 24-valve 300-horsepower engine. The 550i models upgrade to a 4.4-liter, turbo V-8, 32-valve 445-horsepower engine. The hybrid model combines a 3.0-liter turbo inline 6-cylinder, 24-valve, 335-horsepower engine with a 55-horsepower electric motor and 120-volt Lithium-ion battery. The diesel engine is a 3.0-liter, dual overhead cam (DOHC), inline 6-cylinder, 24-valve, 255-horsepower unit.

Fuel Economy
For the 4-cylinder engine, the EPA's fuel-economy ratings are 23 mpg city/34 mpg highway/27 mpg combined with RWD and 22/33/26 mpg with AWD, in the sedan. The 535i engine in the sedan makes 20/30/24 mpg, or 20/29/23 mpg with AWD. The 550i engine in the sedan gets 17/25/20 mpg with RWD, or 16/24/19 mpg with AWD. Fuel efficiency is slightly less in Gran Turismo models. The diesel engine returns 26/38/30 mpg with RWD and 26/37/30 mpg with AWD. All 5 Series models take premium fuel.

Safety Ratings and Technology
In addition to the many optional safety features (some of which are standard on the higher trim levels) standard safety features include a full complement of air bags, anti-lock disc brakes, traction and stability control, and the BMW Assist emergency communications system.

In crash testing conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the 2014 BMW 5 Series receives a 5-star overall rating--the highest possible. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gives the 5 Series its top rating of "Good" in moderate-overlap frontal-offset, side-impact, and roof-strength crash tests.
