Exterior Features
The 2013 BMW 5 Series is offered in 528i, 535i, 550i, and ActiveHybrid 5 model series. Versions equipped with "xDrive" nomenclature indicate the inclusion of all-wheel drive.

The 2013 BMW 528i is equipped with 17-inch aluminum wheels, run-flat tires, heated folding auto-dimming exterior mirrors, automatic xenon adaptive headlights, LED corona ring running lights, fog lights, adaptive brake lights, and rain-sensing wipers.

The BMW 535i, 550i, and ActiveHybrid 5 are equipped with standard 18-inch aluminum wheels, while the 550i offers standard front and rear park-assist sensors, reversing camera, and power trunk operation.

Interior Features
Standard equipment for the 2013 BMW 528i includes leatherette upholstery, wood cabin trim, ambient interior lighting, 10-way power front seats with memory settings, dual-zone automatic climate control, power sunroof, and Keyless Go push-button starting. Bluetooth connectivity is also standard, as well as a 180-watt sound system with HD Radio and 10 speakers, Black Panel instrument display, iDrive controller and color in-dash display, and a universal garage door opener.

The BMW 535i includes leather seats. The 550i model adds 18-way multi-contour front seats, satellite radio, Comfort Access keyless entry, and a navigation system with real-time traffic reports. The ActiveHybrid 5 is equipped with a standard 4-zone automatic climate control system.

Optional Features
Options for the 2013 BMW 5 Series are mainly grouped into packages. All except the BMW 550i can be equipped with the Premium package (power trunk lid operation, Comfort Access keyless entry, satellite radio, leather seats for 528i); Technology package (navigation system with real-time traffic and expanded instrumentation for 528i/535i, head-up display, BMW Apps with smartphone integration); and the Luxury Seating package (active front seats, ventilated front seats, 18-way multi-contour front seats).

The Executive package is exclusive to the 550i model, and includes power trunk lid operation, Comfort Access, soft-close automatic doors, ceramic controls, head-up display, satellite radio, 600-watt premium sound system with 16 speakers, BMW Apps with smartphone integration, and expanded instrumentation.

All 5 Series models are offered with a Cold Weather package (heated front and rear seats, heated steering wheel, headlight washers); Driver Assistance package (Active Blind-Spot Detection, Side- and Top-View Camera system, reversing camera for all except the 550i, front and rear park-assist sensors for all except the 550i); and a Driver Assistance Plus package (Driver Assistance package plus lane-departure warning and Speed Limit Information).

The BMW 535i and 550i can be optioned with a Dynamic Handling package (Adaptive Drive with Dynamic Damping Control and Active Roll Stabilization), while the ActiveHybrid 5 is offered with a Sport package (Dynamic Damping Control, sport steering wheel, Shadowline exterior trim, Anthracite headliner, increased top speed). All three of these versions of the 5 Series are also available with a BMW Individual Composition package including 19-inch wheels (535i/550i), Shadowline exterior trim, Alcantara headliner, premium leather, extended leather, and special cabin finishes.

Any 5 Series without xDrive can be upgraded with the M Sport package. This option group includes larger 18- or 19-inch wheels, performance tires, M Sport steering wheel, M Sport Aerodynamic body kit, hexagonal aluminum cabin trim, Shadowline exterior trim, Anthracite headliner, and an increased top speed.

In addition to these packages, the 5 Series is offered with metallic paint, rear-seat entertainment system, 1,200-watt Bang & Olufsen High End surround-sound audio system, power rear window and manual rear side window sunshades, Parking Assistant technology (not with xDrive), Dynamic Damping Control suspension, and Active Steering (not with xDrive or for ActiveHybrid 5).

Under the Hood
The 2013 BMW 528i is equipped with a turbocharged, 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine that delivers 240 horsepower between 5,000 rpm and 6,500 rpm, and 260 lb.-ft. of torque between 1,250 rpm and 4,800 rpm. An 8-speed automatic transmission with Sport and Manual driving modes is standard, as well as automatic stop/start technology designed to improve fuel economy.

The BMW 535i offers a turbocharged, 3.0-liter 6-cylinder engine generating 300 horsepower at 5,800 rpm and 300 lb.-ft. of torque between 1,300 rpm and 5,000 rpm. A 6-speed manual gearbox is standard on this model, with an 8-speed automatic transmission optional.

The BMW 550i is equipped with a twin turbocharged, 4.4-liter V-8 engine that produces 400 horsepower between 5,500 rpm and 6,400 rpm, and 450 lb.-ft. of torque between 1,750 rpm and 4,500 rpm. A 6-speed manual gearbox is standard, with an 8-speed automatic optional. This engine does not include automatic stop/start technology.

The ActiveHybrid 5 is equipped with the 535i's turbocharged 6-cylinder engine, tuned to generate 335 horsepower. It is paired with a 55-hp electric motor, Lithium-ion battery pack, and a special version of the 8-speed automatic transmission.

All 5 Series models except the ActiveHybrid 5 can be equipped with xDrive all-wheel drive. An 8-speed automatic transmission is included with xDrive, which also offers hill-descent control. A Sport Automatic transmission is optional on any 5 Series equipped with the Sport or M Sport package.

Additionally, all 5 Series models except the 550i are equipped with Driving Dynamics Control with Eco Pro, Comfort and Sport modes, and all BMWs include BMW Ultimate Service as standard equipment, providing free scheduled service for the first 4 years or 50,000 miles of ownership.

Fuel Economy
EPA fuel-economy estimates for the 2013 BMW 5 Series are:

  • 528i: 24/34/28 mpg (city/highway/combined)
  • 528i xDrive: 22/33/26 mpg
  • 535i with manual transmission: 20/30/24 mpg
  • 535i with automatic transmission: 20/30/23 mpg
  • 535i xDrive: 21/30/24 mpg
  • 550i with manual transmission: 15/22/17 mpg
  • 550i with automatic transmission: 17/25/20 mpg
  • 550i xDrive: 16/24/19 mpg
  • ActiveHybrid 5: 23/30/26 mpg

Safety
The 2013 BMW 5 Series is equipped with 6 air bags, traction and stability control, hill-start assist, and 4-wheel ventilated disc anti-lock brakes with brake fade compensation, brake drying, and brake stand-by systems. Also standard: 4 years of BMW Assist with Automatic Collision Notification service. The BMW 550i is equipped with standard front and rear park-assist sensors and a reversing camera, items that are optional on other models as part of the Driver Assistance package and Driver Assistance Plus package (see detail above).

Additionally, the 5 Series can be optioned with a Night Vision with Pedestrian Detection system, and all versions except the ActiveHybrid 5 are available with an active cruise control with Stop & Go system.

In National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) crash tests, the BMW 5 Series received a 5-star overall rating (out of 5 stars). As this overview is written, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has not rated the 2013 BMW 5 Series.
