Overview

The BMW 5 Series is a midsize 4-door sedan that was first introduced in 1972. Now in its sixth generation, the 5-passenger model is all new for 2011. Loyalists to the 5 Series may notice that the station wagon "Touring" variant has been dropped from the lineup. However, in its place BMW has introduced an all-new 5 Series Gran Turismo model, which is based on a modified 7 Series platform.

The 2011 BMW 5 Series is offered in three trim levels: 528i, 535i, and 550i. All three arrive with a long list of standard equipment, including full power accessories, dual-zone climate control, and alloy wheels. Vinyl upholstery is standard on the 528i and 535i, with leather standard on the 550i. Like most BMW models, the 5 Series is offered with several large equipment packages, including Cold Weather, Sport, Premium, Premium Sound, and M Sport. These add equipment such as upgraded upholstery, larger alloy wheels, sport-tuned suspension, high-fidelity audio, and more. Navigation is a stand-alone option.

The 2011 BMW 5 Series is offered with three engine choices. The standard power plant is a 3.0-liter, inline 6-cylinder engine rated at 240 horsepower. The 535i is fitted with a turbocharged 3.0-liter 6-cylinder engine rated at 300 horsepower, while the 550i features a twin-turbo, 4.4-liter V-8 engine tuned to 400 horsepower. A 6-speed manual is standard on all variations with an 8-speed automatic optional. Most 5 Series models are rear-wheel drive, while the xDrive nomenclature designates all-wheel drive. The EPA rates the fuel economy of the 2011 BMW 5 Series between 16 mpg city and 32 mpg highway, depending on powertrain.

The 2011 BMW 528i Sedan starts at a base price of around $45,500 and tops out with the 550i xDrive Sedan, which starts at around $63,000.
