Introduction
The 2015 BMW 4 Series lineup consists of a 2-door coupe, 2-door convertible, and a 4-door hatchback called the Gran Coupe. Collectively, they compete with models such as the Audi A5 and S5, Cadillac ATS Coupe, Infiniti Q60, Lexus RC, and Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupe.

Models and Features
BMW offers the 4 Series in 428i and 435i model series, with rear-wheel (RWD) or all-wheel drive (AWD), and in standard, Luxury Line, Sport Line, or M Sport Line trim levels. Performance-oriented M4 versions of the coupe and convertible models are also available, and are discussed separately.

Upgrading from the 428i to the 435i adds larger, 18-in. aluminum wheels and an anti-theft alarm system. For both series, Luxury Line trim adds an 18-in. multi-spoke wheel design, chrome exterior detailing, wood interior trim, exclusive leather choices with contrast stitching, and a chrome accent for the key fob.

For a sportier look, choose the Sport Line or M Sport Line package. Sport Line versions get 18-in. light alloy wheels with a double-spoke design, high-gloss black exterior trim, sport-bolstered front seats, unique trim and upholstery choices, and a red accent for the key fob. The M Sport Line package includes these features plus an exterior aerodynamics kit, M Sport wheels, and an M Sport steering wheel.

Under the Hood
Every 2015 BMW 428i is equipped with a turbocharged, 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine generating 240 horsepower between 5,000 rpm and 6,000 rpm, and 255 lb.-ft. of torque between 1,250 rpm and 4,800 rpm. In essence, the engine is making its maximum torque or maximum horsepower from just after you push the accelerator pedal to whenever the transmission upshifts to the next gear.

The BMW 435i is more powerful, thanks to a turbocharged, 3.0-liter 6-cylinder engine. This power plant generates 300 horsepower between 5,800 rpm and 6,000 rpm and 300 lb.-ft. of torque between 1,300 rpm and 5,000 rpm. The result is a broad, and more robust, power curve similar to the 428i.

Both series have an 8-speed automatic transmission and RWD as standard equipment. A 6-speed manual transmission is available only for the 2-door coupe, and availability is dependent on configuration. The automatic includes paddle shifters and both Sport and Manual shift modes in addition to the Normal setting. Any 2015 4 Series can be optioned with xDrive AWD.

BMW includes automatic start/stop engine technology for the 4 Series, which shuts the engine off to conserve fuel when the car is idling in traffic or at an intersection. Owners can also program the car with an Eco Pro driving mode that is designed to maximize fuel economy.

Fuel Economy
According to the EPA, the 428i model's fuel-economy ratings range from a low of 21 mpg in the city with the xDrive Convertible to a high of 35 mpg on the highway with the rear-drive Coupe and the automatic transmission.

Upgrade to the 435i and the range begins at 20 mpg in the city for the xDrive Convertible and reaches 32 mpg on the highway for the rear-drive Coupe with automatic transmission.

Safety and Technology
Every 2015 4 Series includes a free, 10-year subscription to BMW Assist eCall service, which includes an SOS Emergency Request button as well as automatic-collision notification. By choosing from a number of optional equipment packages 4 Series buyers can add a reversing camera, park-assist sensors, and automatic high-beam headlights.

A Driver Assistance Plus package contains active blind-spot monitoring, a lane-departure warning system, forward-collision warning with city collision mitigation, and pedestrian protection. A 360-degree-view camera system is also included with this option package, or is available separately, and BMW offers an active cruise control system as a stand-alone option for the 4 Series.

An optional Technology package adds a navigation system with touchpad control, BMW Online and BMW Apps services, real-time traffic information, and a head-up display.
