Overview

The 3 Series, like the smaller 1 Series, receives BMW's "Professional audio upgrade" as standard equipment. A moonroof, HiFi audio and automatic high beams are repackaged options. All base 328i models receive a new 16-inch wheel design.

  • Minor changes for 2010
  • New standard 16-inch wheel design for 328i and 328i xDrive models
  • Moonroof is now offered as a stand-alone option, or as part of the Premium package on 328i and 328i xDrive models
  • Professional audio upgrade is now standard
  • Premium Sound package with Logic7 now includes HiFi audio option
  • Automatic high beams are a new stand-alone option

The 3 Series is BMW's best-selling model, now in its fifth generation. It's a compact entry-level luxury car that's available as a sedan, coupe, wagon, or hardtop convertible. The 2010 BMW 3 Series is relatively unchanged from the previous model year, which saw the introduction of two new engine types.

Standard equipment on the base 2010 BMW 3 Series model, the 328i, includes 16-inch wheels, heated side mirrors, leatherette upholstery, automatic climate control, and a 10-speaker CD stereo. The 335i has 17-inch wheels, xenon headlights, and power front seats with driver memory. The Premium package adds leather upholstery, auto-dimming mirrors, Bluetooth, and other features. The Sport package builds on that, adding larger wheels, sport seats and steering wheel, and firmer suspension, plus special exterior trim. The Climate package includes heated front seats and steering wheel, retractable headlight washers, and fold-down rear seats. Many other stand-alone options are available.

The twin-turbocharged, 6-cylinder diesel engine in the 335d is emissions-legal in all 50 States, makes 265 horsepower and 425 lb.-ft. of torque, and delivers 23 mpg in the city and 36 mpg on the highway, according to the EPA. The 328i features a 3.0-liter, inline 6-cylinder engine that makes 230 horsepower and 200 lb.-ft. of torque, while the 335i has a turbocharged version of that same engine, rated at 300 horsepower and 300 lb.-ft. of torque. The gasoline engines deliver about 17 mpg in the city and 25 to 28 mpg on the highway. All gasoline-powered 3 Series models have 6-speed manual or automatic transmissions, while the 6-speed automatic transmission is standard on the 335d.

In government crash tests conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the BMW 3 Series sedan and wagon received 4 (out of 5) stars for frontal-impact protection, and 5 start for side-impact protection.

Pricing for the 2010 BMW 3 Series starts at around $33,150.
