What's New for 2014:

  • 3 Series Gran Turismo model debuts
  • 328d turbo-diesel models newly available
  • Minor equipment changes

The 2014 BMW 3 Series lineup includes a 4-door sedan, 4-door wagon, and a 5-door hatchback that the automaker calls a Gran Turismo. Five different engines are available for this car, some paired with an all-wheel-drive (AWD) system. A high-performance M3 model is also available and is covered separately.

Models and Features
BMW designates its 3 Series models using nomenclature related to the engine. The least expensive version is the 320i, offered only as a sedan. The popular 328i comes in sedan, wagon, and Gran Turismo body styles, while the new 328d turbo-diesel model is available only as a sedan and a wagon. The 335i nameplate is affixed only to the sedan and Gran Turismo. All ActiveHybrid 3 models are sedans. If a 3 Series is also wearing an "xDrive" badge then it has AWD.

Highlights of the 320i model's standard equipment list include aluminum wheels, automatic headlights, fog lights, and rain-sensing wipers. Inside, the 320i includes the expected power-operated accessories as well as cruise control, a 6-way manually adjustable driver's seat, Sensatec seat upholstery, floor mats, ambient and courtesy lighting, and automatic climate control. An iDrive infotainment system with Bluetooth and USB connectivity is standard, along with a trip computer and a stereo with a CD player and HD Radio.

By moving up to a 328i, 328d, or 335i model, BMW installs a few additional upgrades over the 320i, but most of the expected luxury features are extra-cost upgrades.

Options and Packages
BMW offers a range of options for the 2014 BMW 3 Series, including xDrive AWD, leather upholstery, navigation system, and a power sunroof. Many features are grouped into option packages such as the Cold Weather package (heated front and rear seats, heated steering wheel); Premium package (Comfort Access, satellite radio, and more depending on the model); Lighting package (xenon headlights with adaptive light control); Driver Assistance package (park-assist sensors and a reversing camera); and the Sport package (sport-bolstered front seats, bigger wheels, tighter suspension, special interior trim).

Choose a 3 Series wearing a 328 or 335 designation and BMW provides a choice of primary trims in addition to standard equipment: Luxury Line, Sport Line, and M Sport Line. In addition to the options listed in the preceding paragraph, these versions of the 3 Series are offered with a Driver Assistance Plus package (active lane-departure warning, active blind-spot warning, side- and top-view camera, speed limit information system); Dynamic Handling package (variable sport steering, adaptive sport suspension); and a Technology package (Enhanced Bluetooth, smartphone integration, BMW Apps, navigation, head-up display, and more). The following options are also exclusive to the 328i, 328d, and 335i models: Sport automatic transmission, performance brakes, manual side window sunshades, concierge services, premium surround-sound audio system, Parking Assistant, and active cruise control.

Regardless of the 3 Series model, the list of upgrades above is a selective one, and is dependent on many factors. For full details, consult your BMW retailer.

Under the Hood
Choose a BMW 320i and the car is equipped with a 180-horsepower, turbocharged, 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine, while the BMW 328i is equipped with a 240-horsepower version of that power plant. The BMW 335i features a 300-horsepower, turbocharged 6-cylinder engine.

New for 2014, the 328d models have a 2.0-liter, turbo-diesel 4-cylinder engine generating 180 horsepower at 4,000 rpm and 280 lb.-ft. of torque between 1,750 rpm and 2,750 rpm. BMW continues to offer an ActiveHybrid 3 model that pairs a turbocharged, 3.0-liter 6-cylinder engine with an electric assist motor and a Lithium-ion battery charged by a regenerative braking system. Total power output is 335 horsepower.

All 2014 3 Series models are equipped with an 8-speed automatic transmission and automatic start/stop technology designed to conserve fuel. Depending on vehicle configuration, the automatic includes steering wheel paddle shifters. A traditional 6-speed manual gearbox is available at no extra charge for most 3 Series sedans. Additionally, a Driving Dynamics Control system calibrates the drivetrain to the driver's preference of Eco Pro, Comfort, Sport, and Sport+ modes, and the 3 Series models' braking system is equipped with Brake Fade Compensation, Brake Drying, and Adaptive Brake-light features.

Fuel Economy
The most fuel-efficient version of the 2014 BMW 3 Series is the 328d Sedan with rear-wheel drive. It gets 37 mpg in combined driving, according to the EPA. The least fuel-efficient model is the 335i xDrive Sedan with a manual gearbox, which is rated to get 23 mpg in combined driving. All other versions of the car fall between these numbers.

Safety Ratings and Technology
In crash testing conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), every version of the 2014 BMW 3 Series receives a 5-star overall rating--the highest possible. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has tested the 3 Series Sedan, giving the car its top rating of "Good" in all assessments except for the small overlap frontal-impact test, in which the car rates "Marginal." The IIHS also gives the 3 Series a "Basic" front crash-prevention rating, depending on equipment and configuration.

Every 2014 BMW 3 Series is equipped with the automaker's BMW Assist eCall technology, which is active for the first 10 years of ownership. With this service, the 3 Series provides an SOS emergency call button inside of the vehicle and automatically contacts authorities in order to speed assistance in the event of a collision in which the car's air bags deploy.

Additional safety features, depending on the model and selected equipment, include a reversing camera, front and rear park-assist sensors, active blind-spot and lane-departure warning systems, an active cruise control system, adaptive headlights, automatic high-beam headlights, and a side- and top-view camera system.
