The 2012 BMW 1 Series is a compact luxury car available in coupe and convertible styles, each in the 128i and the higher-trim 135i configurations. Standard are 17-inch wheels, automatic headlights, and fog lights. A power-folding, automatic, fully lined soft top comes with the 128i convertible.
Standard amenities on the 2012 BMW 1 Series include cruise control, 8-way front seats, tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, premium-vinyl upholstery, 10-speaker sound system, HD radio, and iPod connectivity.
The list of options available in special packages on the lower-trim version and on the 135i version includes 18-inch wheels, sport-tuned suspension, adaptive Xenon headlights with automatic leveling and washers, sunroof, keyless ignition and entry, rear parking sensors, alarm system, driver memory, leather upholstery, Bluetooth connectivity, emergency telematics system, and exterior trim and styling enhancements.
Under the Hood
The 2012 BMW 1 Series offers a choice of two 3.0-liter in; a 6-speed automatic transmission is optional. The 135i comes with a turbocharged engine rated at 300 horsepower, with a standard 6-speed manual and an optional 7-speed automated manual transmission.
EPA fuel-economy figures for the 2012 BMW 1 Series are:
- 128i coupe regardless of transmission and convertible with manual transmission: 18/28/22 mpg (city/highway/combined)
- 128i convertible with automatic transmission: 18/27/21 mpg
- 135i coupe with manual transmission: 20/28/23 mpg
- 135i coupe and convertible with automated manual transmission: 18/25/21 mpg
- 135i convertible with manual transmission: 19/28/22 mpg
Standard safety features on the 2012 BMW 1 Series include traction and stability control; hill-start assist for manual-equipped vehicles; a battery of air bags, including higher-extending front-seat side air bags in the convertible; and pop-up rollover hoops in the convertible.
To date, neither the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) nor the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) have conducted crash tests on the 2012 BMW 1 Series.
