The 1 Series is the entry level to the BMW fleet, and is available in two trim levels: 128i and 135i, the latter being the more powerful. For 2011, the 135i features a new turbocharged engine that improves fuel efficiency.

Standard features on the 2011 BMW 128i include 17-inch alloy wheels, automatic headlights, cruise control, 10-speaker stereo with a CD player and auxiliary audio jack, and much more. The convertible version has a power-folding soft top.

The 135i trim adds a turbocharged engine, sport-tuned suspension (which is also optional on the 128i), 18-inch wheels, Xenon headlights, and automatic climate control. A sunroof and split folding rear seats are standard on 1 Series coupes. Many option packages are available.

All 2011 BMW 1 Series models feature 3.0-liter, inline 6-cylinder engines. In the 128i, the engine produces 230 horsepower and 200 lb.-ft. of torque, and in the 135i the turbocharged engine makes 300 horsepower and 300 lb.-ft. of torque. A 6-speed manual transmission is standard, and a 6-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission with manual shift control is optional on the 128i; a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission with manual shift control is optional on the 135i. All models feature rear-wheel drive exclusively. The 128i coupe with a manual transmission delivers 18 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway, according to the EPA. The 135i with manual transmission delivers 20 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway.

Also, for 2011, BMW has produced a limited number of a model called the BMW 1 Series M. This is a high-performance version, and its twin-turbo, 3.0-liter, inline 6-cylinder engine produces 335 horsepower and 332 lb.-ft. of torque.

Standard safety features on the 2011 BMW 1 Series include anti-lock disc brakes, traction control, stability control, anti-skid system, hill-start assist (for manual transmission models), pop-up roll hoops (for convertibles), curtain side air bags (for coupes), and front side air bags.
