Overview
BMW built much of its early reputation on small, nimble, fun-to-drive vehicles. For decades, the company's smallest offering in the United States was the 3 Series-a model that has grown in size and weight to proportions more commonly associated with the larger 5 Series. In 2008, BMW introduced the 1 series to the U.S. marketplace (it launched in Europe in 2004). Smaller, lighter, and more nimble than the 3 Series-with which it shares gasoline engines-the 1 Series is now the entry-level BMW model.

BMW provides a 4-year/50,000-mile new-vehicle limited warranty and a 4-year/unlimited mileage membership in the BMW Assist Safety Plan. The BMW Maintenance Program includes all factory-recommended maintenance items for the first 4 years/50,000 miles of ownership.

Model Lineup
There are four different BMW 1 Series models for 2009: 128i coupe, 128i Convertible, 135i coupe and 135i Convertible. All have 2 doors, with seating for up to 4 passengers. The coupe models feature a trunk, while the convertible models are equipped with a power-operated soft convertible roof. The 128i models offer a normally aspirated 3.0-liter powerplant and the 135i models offer a twin-turbo 3.0-liter engine. All 1 Series models are rear-wheel drive.

Standard features on all 2009 1 Series models include power windows, power locks, automatic headlamps, rain-sensing wipers, cruise control, and automatic climate control. The more powerful, performance-oriented 135i is offered with standard Xenon headlamps and an M-division Aerodynamic Kit. The 135i also offers larger multi-piston brakes and 18-inch wheels. BMW has grouped many popular options into packages. The Sport package adds a sport suspension, sport seats, larger wheels and tires, and "shadowline trim" (no chrome). The Premium package adds such options as leather upholstery, auto-dimming mirrors, lumbar support, and dual power seats. The Cold Weather package adds heated seats and a ski bag. Stand-alone options include adaptive Xenon headlamps, adaptive cruise control, on-board DVD-based navigation, Premium hi-fi audio, satellite radio, and an iPod adapter.

Powertrain
BMW offers a choice of two different engines on the 2009 1 Series; both are 3.0-liter, inline 6-cylinder units. The first version, found in all 128i models, is normally aspirated and rated at 230 hp with 200 lb.-ft. of torque (EPA fuel-economy ratings of 18 mpg city/28 mpg highway with an automatic transmission). The second version, found in the 135i models, is a slightly different design that has been equipped with twin turbochargers to increase output to 300 hp and 300 lb.-ft. of torque (EPA fuel-economy ratings of 18 mpg city/25 mpg highway). Both engines are available with either a standard 6-speed manual transmission or BMW's 6-speed Steptronic automatic transmission.

The 2009 BMW 1 Series coupe and convertibles come with standard rear-wheel drive. Depending on model, standard wheels are either 16- or 17-inch aluminum alloy, with 18-inch aluminum wheels optional. Run-flat tires and a tire-pressure-monitoring system are standard features on all 1 Series vehicles. All 1 Series models feature a fully independent suspension with disc brakes front and rear.

Safety
All 2009 BMW 1 Series models include dual front air bags with dual-threshold deployment and 2-stage smart air bags protecting the driver and front passenger. Side air bags, and a front- and rear-seat head protection system (the convertible model features BMW's Rollover Protection System-no curtain air bags), offer additional protection to occupants. Front seat belts feature automatic pre-tensioners. Lower Anchors and Tethers for CHildren (LATCH) attachments for infant and child seats are standard in the two rear seating positions. The extensive list of standard electronic safety aids also includes anti-lock brakes (ABS) and Dynamic Stability Control (DSC). DSC includes BMW's versions of electronic brake proportioning, cornering brake stability enhancement, Dynamic Brake Control, Brake Fade Compensation, Brake Standby, Dynamic Traction Control, and Start-off Assistant. Also, BMW Assist, BMW's in-car telematics offering, is available optionally in the Premium package.

The BMW 1 Series has not been tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

Technology
The two 6-cylinder powerplants available in the 2009 BMW 1 Series feature direct injection. This technology includes special direct piezo gasoline injectors designed to release the proper amount of fuel into the engine for efficient combustion. The result, BMW claims, is better engine response and improved fuel economy. BMW's Dynamic Stability Control (DSC), standard on both 1 Series models, has been specifically tailored for the performance-oriented 135i. Under certain conditions, DSC is able to simulate a limited-slip differential lock on the rear wheels. This prevents one wheel from slipping and aids stronger acceleration out of turns. Radio options include Sirius satellite radio, HD radio, Premium Sound, and Bluetooth. While a USB port is an option, an auxiliary jack is standard for connecting an external MP3 player to the stereo system.
