Overview
The Frankfurt Motor Show represented the world debut of the Audi TT concept car in 1995. The design, both inside and out, was daring, pioneering and very unique. Three years later, in autumn 1998, the Audi TT coupe was introduced as a production vehicle and followed a year later by a topless Roadster. After an early issue with high-speed stability on the first-generation TT, Audi responded with changes to the suspension and bodywork. It did not take long for enthusiasts to grumble about the factory dialed-in understeer-and inherently safer handling characteristic for most drivers. Addressing those issues, the all-new-for-2008 second-generation TT coupe and Roadster utilize the Audi Space Frame (ASF) technology. Combining aluminum and steel in the rigid chassis, devotees will revel as weight distribution and dynamic handling is greatly improved (note to enthusiasts: rumors abound of an even higher-performance TT-S and TT-RS in 2008.

In contrast to the 2+2 Audi TT coupe, the Roadster gives up the rear seats in exchange for a power-operated soft convertible top. In addition, the Roadster's windshield frame and aluminum side sills have been reinforced for greater rigidity.

Model Lineup
The 2008 Audi TT coupe and Roadster are available in three trim levels, with two different engine choices and drivelines. The TT 2.0T is offered with a turbocharged 4-cylinder powerplant, front-wheel drive, and the "S tronic" automatic transmission. The TT 2.0T Premium adds standard equipment, but retains the identical engine and transmission. The TT 3.2 quattro is offered with a 6-cylinder engine, all-wheel drive, and a choice of 6-speed manual or "S tronic" automatic transmission.

All 2008 Audi TT coupe models offer seating for 4 (consider it a 2+2 configuration); fold-down rear seats are standard. The 2-seat TT Roadster is equipped with a fully automatic retractable soft top with a heated glass rear window and a wind deflector. All 2008 TT models are equipped with automatic climate control, alcantara leather sport seats, aluminum interior trim, and power windows and mirrors. Standard wheels are 17-inch aluminum alloy. Options include Sirius satellite radio, heated front seats, and Audi magnetic ride-an innovative high-tech suspension dampening system that is automatically able to maintain ride comfort and sporty dynamics. The 3.2 model is available with the "S line" sport package. This package includes larger 19-inch double-spoke wheels, revised bumpers, and special interior stitching. The optional Audi Exclusive package adds two-tone leather seating and interior trim. Baseball optic leather-an upgraded interior leather package-is exclusive to the 3.2 Roadster.

Powertrain
The 2008 Audi TT 2.0T models feature a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine rated at 200 hp and 207 lb.-ft. of torque. The standard "S tronic" (formerly DSG) automatic transmission is a sophisticated 6-speed dual-clutch gearbox with electro-hydraulic control driving only the front wheels. EPA fuel economy estimates are 23 mpg city/31 mpg highway for the coupe, and 22 mpg city/29 mpg highway for the Roadster. Audi TT 3.2 models feature a direct-injection 3.2-liter V-6 rated at 250 hp and 236 lb.-ft. of torque. The 3.2 is available with a 6-speed manual (the EPA estimates 17 mpg city/24 mpg highway for both coupe and Roadster), or the S tronic transmission (EPA estimates of 18 mpg city/24 mpg highway). Audi's all-wheel-drive quattro system is standard on both V-6 models. The standard powertrain warranty for the 2008 Audi TT is 4 years/50,000 miles and includes roadside assistance for the first 4 years of ownership.

Safety
Standard safety equipment on the 2008 Audi TT coupe and Roadster includes dual-stage front air bags, side air bags, and a tire-pressure-monitoring system. An electronic stabilization program (ESP) and anti-lock brakes are standard on all models, as well. The rear seats on the coupe feature the Lower Anchorage and Tethers for Children (LATCH) system to assist with proper infant and child seat installation. On the Roadster, roll hoops located behind the driver and passenger offer additional protection in the event of a vehicle rollover. The 2008 Audi TT coupe and Roadster have not undergone crash testing by either the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), therefore crash test results are not available.

Technology
Audi's approach to the automatic transmission is revolutionary. Unlike most automatic transmissions, the "S tronic" direct-shift gearbox contains two wet plate-type clutches-much like a conventional manual transmission. The S tronic utilizes these clutches in sequence-and within a fraction of a second-to allow gearshifts to be made without power interruptions. Acceleration is as fast (or faster) than most drivers can operate a manual transmission. Though it is computer-regulated, the driver still has final control over the system. Shifting can be called for manually at the gear lever or through the steering wheel-mounted paddles. In automatic mode, the driver is able to choose between "sport" or "comfort" settings to regulate the intensity (and smoothness) of the shifts.
