Overview
Introduced in 2008 as the brand's first luxury sports coupe for U.S. buyers in more than 16 years, the Audi A5/S5 returns in 2009 with only a few standard equipment and option program changes. Adaptive cruise control is now available for both models, as well as Audi drive select, Audi music interface, and the PTA Technology package.

All Audis are covered by a 4-year/50,000-mile basic warranty. Roadside assistance coverage lasts 4 years, regardless of mileage.

Model Lineup
The 2009 lineup includes two models: Audi A5 and Audi S5. The standard A5 is equipped with a V-6 engine, while the enthusiast-oriented S5 model features a V-8 engine and other performance-enhancing improvements.

Even though it is eclipsed by the performance-oriented S5, the A5 is positioned by Audi as a traditional fine European luxury coupe, rather than as an entry-level model, offering a long list of standard equipment and amenities, including leather seats, 3-spoke leather-wrapped multi-function steering wheel, 3-zone climate control, and 18-inch, 5-spoke cast alloy wheels. Options are few, and mostly limited to audio or electronic upgrades.

The S5 offers a sportier level of standard equipment. The suspension is re-tuned for higher performance, and the braking system upgraded with larger rotors and calipers. All of these modifications are geared towards ultimate handling. Standard wheels are a 19-inch, 5-double spoke design with performance tires, while 19-inch, 5-spoke cast alloy wheels are optional. The S5 adds sport seats, heated front seats, bi-Xenon headlights with LED daytime running lights, and a sunroof. Both models offer an updated version of Audi's MMI (Multi-Media Interface) information system designed to control navigation, audio and vehicle features from one central location.

Powertrain
The standard engine in the 2009 Audi A5 is a 3.2-liter V-6, rated at 265 hp at 6500 rpm (the torque rating is 243 lb.-ft at 3250-5000 rpm), mated to a 6-speed manual transmission. A 6-speed Tiptronic automatic transmission is available. Audi's award-winning quattro permanent all-wheel drive (AWD) is standard. It sends 60 percent of the engine's torque to the rear wheels, which the maker says results in better driving dynamics.

The S5 features Audi's 4.2-liter V-8 engine, rated at 354 hp at 6800 rpm and 325 lb.-ft. of torque at 3500 rpm. The standard transmission is a 6-speed manual with an available 6-speed Tiptronic automatic. EPA fuel-economy estimates for the A5 are 18 mpg city/27 mpg highway, while the S5 numbers are 14 mpg city/21 mpg highway.

The A5/S5 has a 5-link front suspension and an independent trapezoidal-link rear suspension with anti-drive compensation. Audi's quattro permanent AWD is standard, along with electronic stabilization program (electronic stability control). Audi drive select and dynamic steering systems are optional. The S5 has a standard sport suspension, while the S-Line sport suspension is optional on the A5.

Safety
Safety features on the 2009 Audi A5/S5 include six standard air bags (driver and passenger front and side, as well as curtain air bags protecting front and rear outboard passengers). Standard electronic safety aids include anti-lock brakes, electronic traction control, and electronic stability control. (For performance driving, both the stability and traction control can be defeated.)

Neither the 2008 nor the 2009 model A5 and S5 have been crash tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

Technology
The 2009 Audi A5 and S5 employ LED daytime running lights-part of the Audi adaptive lighting configuration-which combine bi-Xenon headlights with a dynamic cornering lighting system for upgraded illumination of the road at night. The rain/light sensor automatically turns on the headlights if needed. A Multi Media Interface (MMI) is standard, along with Sirius satellite radio. The standard audio package includes the Audi 180-watt, 10-speaker sound system and Audio Symphony (AM/FM stereo with 6-disc in-dash CD player with SD card slot with MP3 capability). An upgraded Audi Music Interface is now available as a stand-alone option for both models. For the dedicated audiophile, optional on the A5/S5 is a 14-speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system from the noted Danish hi-fi specialist. Rated at nearly 500 watts, it features surround sound and active driving noise compensation. The PTA Technology package for the A5/S5 now includes Audi side assist, and the navigation package includes a Voice Control System. Adaptive cruise control is optional on both the A5 and S5.
