The first four-seat coupe from Audi
in more than a decade, the 2008 A5/S5 features a design based on Audi's Nuvolari quattro concept car of 2003. Audi hopes to convey a sporty look with the car's very wide and low stance, and strong shoulders over the wheel arches. Detailing includes styled taillights, flowing transitions of the roofline, and the hallmark Audi single-frame grille.Model Lineup
Initially, Audi will introduce two models for 2008: the A5 and S5. The A5 is equipped with a V-6 engine, while the performance-oriented S5 features a V-8 engine.
Even though it is eclipsed by the performance-oriented S5, the A5 is positioned by Audi as a traditional fine European luxury coupe, rather than as an entry-level model, offering a long list of standard equipment and amenities. Options are few, and mostly limited to audio or electronic upgrades.
The S5 offers an improved performance level of standard equipment. The suspension is re-tuned and improved, and the braking system upgraded with larger rotors and calipers. All of these modifications are geared towards ultimate handling. Standard wheels are 18 inches, with performance tires. Both models offer an updated version of Audi's MMI (Muli-Media Interface) information system designed to control navigation, audio and vehicle features from one central location.Powertrain
The standard engine in the 2008 Audi A5 is a 3.2-liter V-6, rated at 265 hp (the torque rating is 243 lb.-ft), mated to a 6-speed manual transmission. A 6-speed automatic transmission is available. Audi's award-winning quattro all-wheel drivetrain is standard. It sends 60 percent of the engine's torque to the rear wheels, which the maker says results in better driving dynamics. The S5 features Audi's 4.2-liter V-8 engine, rated at 354 hp and 325 lb.-ft. of torque. Again, the standard transmission is a 6-speed manual with an available 6-speed automatic. EPA fuel economy figures have not been released. All Audis are covered by a 4-year/50,000-mile basic warranty. Roadside assistance coverage lasts 4 years, regardless of mileage.Safety
Every 2008 Audi A5/S5 is equipped with six standard air bags. These include driver and passenger front and side, as well as curtain air bags protecting front and rear outboard passengers. Standard electronic safety aids include anti-lock brakes, electronic traction control, and electronic stability control. (For performance driving, both the stability and traction control can be defeated.) The A5 and S5 have not been crash tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA
) or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS
The 2008 Audi A5 and S5 employ LED daytime running lights-part of the Audi adaptive lighting configuration-which combine bi-Xenon headlights with a dynamic cornering lighting system for upgraded illumination of the road at night. For the audio enthusiast, optional on the A5/S5 is a 14-speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system from the noted Danish hi-fi specialist. Rated at nearly 500 watts, it features surround sound and active driving noise compensation.
