Overview
Audi's popular A6 sedan traces its roots back to the first Audi 5000 and 100/200 models from the 1970s. Those early sedans offered buyers a comfortable and capable front-wheel-drive (FWD) European sedan with 4- and 5-cylinder powerplants. In the mid-1980s, Audi introduced turbocharging and its quattro permanent all-wheel drive (AWD) to the Audi 100/200 models. These innovative technologies improved engine power, and dramatically increased vehicle traction in slippery conditions. In 1995, the fourth-generation Audi 100 became the Audi A6 as the company switched to a new alphanumeric nomenclature. Now in its fifth generation (new for 2005), the Audi A6 is offered in both sedan and wagon and S6 sport sedan body styles, with a variety of engines and drivelines.

The front fascia of the 2009 A6 has been updated with a redesigned front bumper, new fog lamps, and more pronounced air intakes. Audi's signature LED front driving lights are positioned just below the headlamps. The updates to the rear are more pronounced as the taillights now continue to the trunk and the chrome accent strip has been eliminated. To modernize the appearance, the taillights now feature new red LED bulbs surrounding a long white strip of reverse lights (inspired by Audi's flagship R8 model). An all-new 3.0-liter V-6 engine, suspension/handling upgrades, new wheel program, aluminum interior accents, soft door armrests, and new optional side assist are other changes to the 2009 models.

Model Lineup
The updated Audi A6 is available in three different models: A6 sedan, S6 sedan and A6 Avant (wagon). Front-wheel drive (FWD) is standard on the base A6 sedan, while the performance models (and Avant) receive the latest updated version of quattro permanent all-wheel drive (AWD) with a rear-bias 40/60 torque split as standard equipment.

Powertrain
The standard Audi A6 features a new supercharged, 3.0-liter V-6 engine rated at 300 hp at just under 5000 rpm and 310 lb.-ft. of torque at 2500-4850 rpm. The engine is only available with the Tiptronic automatic transmission, and it features the newly-implemented 40/60 asymmetric rear-biased quattro AWD for improved driving feel. The suspension has also been recalibrated for 2009; Audi has re-engineered the shocks and springs to improve the ride, the company says. The sedan (and Avant) are also available in FWD with a 255-hp (at 6500 rpm), 3.2-liter V-6 engine that delivers 243 lb.-ft. of torque at 3000-5000 rpm. This engine is only available with Audi's Multitronic CVT transmission. The A6 4.2 V-8 engine generates 350 hp at 6800 rpm and 325 lb.-ft. of torque at 3500 rpm. It is available with Tiptronic and quattro only. EPA fuel-economy estimates for the 4.2-liter engine are 16 mpg city/23 mpg highway. The performance model, the Audi S6, offers buyers a race-bred, 5.2-liter 10-cylinder engine rated at 435 hp at 6800 rpm and 398 lb.-ft. of torque at 3000-5000 rpm (the basic engine configuration is shared with the powerplant used in the Lamborghini Gallardo). EPA fuel economy for the 5.2-liter engine is estimated at 14 mpg city/19 mpg highway.

As the competition from the Mercedes-Benz E63 and BMW M5 continues to raise the bar, Audi is demonstrating that it is not content with keeping the playing field level. With that in mind, the German automaker has recently introduced the 2009 Audi RS6. Available in either sedan or Avant body styles, the limited-production, twin-turbocharged 580-hp RS6 is the most powerful A6 model to date.

Safety
Safety features in the 2009 Audi A6/Avant/S6 include full-size, dual-stage front air bags for driver and front passenger, front knee air bags, side air bags and Sideguard head air bags. Optional rear side air bags are also available for the driver and all passengers. Other safety features include an electronic stabilization program (electronic stability control), 4-wheel anti-lock brakes, speed-sensitive steering, front crash sensors, integrated headrests, and new optional side assist (for blind-spot detection).

The 2009 Audi A6/Avant/S6 has not been crash tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The A6 has, however, been named a "Top Safety Pick" by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) for three years running.

Technology
When it comes to technology, the Audi A6/Avant/S6 has it covered, offering all of the following: a rear parking system; electromechanical parking brake; DVD-based navigation system with voice control; side-assist lane-change system; bi-Xenon headlamps with LED daytime running lights; advanced keyless entry; remote start; Bluetooth hands-free phone interface; and the third-generation multi-media interface (MMI) operating logic with central display screen.
