The Audi A5/S5 is a midsize model based on the Audi A4 platform. The A5 comes in four models: A5 Coupe, A5 Cabriolet, S5 Coupe, and S5 Cabriolet. (The S is the high-performance iteration.) The trim levels are Premium, Premium Plus, and Prestige. Standard exterior features include 18-inch alloy wheels, automatic headlights, fog lights, automatic wipers, and either a tilt-only sunroof (on the coupe) or a power-retractable sunroof with wind blocker (on the convertible). The Premium Plus trim includes bi-Xenon headlights, LED running lights and taillights, and upgraded exterior trim. The Prestige trim adds adaptive headlights, and keyless ignition and entry.
Standard interior features on the A5 Premium trim include leather upholstery, power accessories (including 8-way adjustable front seats), automatic climate control, and a 10-speaker sound system. The Premium Plus features 3-zone climate control, heated front seats, and auto-dimming mirrors. The Prestige trim upgrades to a Bang & Olufsen sound system. The coupe has 13.5 cubic feet of trunk space, while the cabriolet with the top down still offers 11.4 cubic feet of trunk space.
Numerous options are available with all trim levels. The higher trims offer such upgrades as ventilated sport seats; special body elements, wheels, and upholstery; adaptive cruise control, and more.
Under the Hood
The Audi A5/S5 is offered with three engine choices. The standard power plant is a 2.0-liter, turbocharged 4-cylinder engine rated at 211 horsepower. A more powerful engine, standard on S5 Coupe models, is a 4.2-liter 8-cylinder unit that generates 354 horsepower. The S5 Cabriolet is fitted with a 3.0-liter, supercharged 6-cylinder engine rated at 333 horsepower. The standard A5 Coupe models feature a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic transmission, as well as Audi's proprietary quattro all-wheel drive. A5 Cabriolet models come with front-wheel drive and a standard continuously variable transmission. S5 Coupe models feature a 6-speed manual or automatic transmission, while the S5 Cabriolet comes standard with a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission.
The EPA rates the fuel economy of the 2012 Audi A5/S5 between 21 mpg city and 31 mpg highway, depending on powertrain.
Standard safety equipment on 2012 Audi A5 models are anti-lock disc brakes, front-seat side air bags, and side curtain air bags.
To date, neither the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) nor the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has conducted safety tests on the 2012 Audi A5/S5.
