Overview
Introduced in 1994, Audi's volume-leading A4 model traces its lineage back to the Audi 80, first launched in 1966. Now in its third generation, the A4 has grown incrementally in size and luxury offerings with every subsequent redesign-as has the competition from BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Lexus and Infiniti as the bar continues to be raised in this class of cars. For 2009, Audi presents an all-new, fourth-generation A4 and S4 with dynamic styling, new sophisticated powerplants, and innovative technology designed to make it even more competitive.

When compared to the previous model, the all-new 2009 Audi A4 luxury sport sedan, Avant wagon, Cabriolet and S4 Cabriolet feature entirely new, sportier proportions. Overall length is up nearly 5 inches and width has been increased by more than 2 inches. The wheelbase has been stretched, and the hood is longer. The front body overhang has also been shortened, allowing the wheels to be pushed further to the edge of the vehicle, improving ride and handling characteristics, Audi says.

Interior dimensions have grown as well. The cabin is longer than the previous models, and rear-seat passengers enjoy knee room that has grown by 1.4 inches. Headroom and shoulder room has also increased, offering additional comfort to occupants. Trunk capacity on the sedan is 17 cubic feet, a volume greater than any competitor offers, according to Audi. In addition, trunk capacity remains the same whether the car is equipped with front-wheel drive (FWD) or Audi's quattro permanent all-wheel drive (AWD). Fold-down rear seats are standard.

While the body shell has grown in nearly every dimension, advanced engineering is credited with keeping the new body extremely light in weight. Ultra-high-strength steels are utilized throughout the body shell resulting in significant weight savings. According to Audi, the 2009 model's bare body shell alone weighs 10 percent less than that of the previous model.

The 2009 Audi A4 is covered by a comprehensive 4-year/50,000-mile limited new-vehicle warranty that includes roadside assistance for four years.

Model Lineup
The new A4 offers many detail designs found in Audi's flagship, the A8. The Driver Information System (DIS), a display supplying information about audio, climate and vehicle settings, is now standard on all V-6 models. When ordered with a navigation system, the Multi Media Interface (MMI) is integrated into the center tunnel and the information displayed on a 7-inch color screen.

For the first time, the A4 features an electromechanical parking brake operated by a small electronic lever-another luxury feature derived from the A8. It functions as a parking brake, emergency brake, and start assistant to prevent the vehicle from rolling backwards when it departs. The space formerly occupied by a hand brake now houses additional cabin storage with twin 12-volt power adapters.

Standard equipment on the 2009 Audi A4 includes Bluetooth wireless connectivity, Sirius satellite radio, S-Line exterior (standard on 2.0T and 3.2, with greatly enhanced exterior appearance), new 17-inch bi-color polished wheels (standard on 2.0T), and 18-inch, 5-arm wheels (standard on 3.2). Option program changes include a new Sport package (with summer tires) for 2.0T and 3.2; a stand-alone Bose Audio System option replaces the audio package; rear parking sensors are now available on 2.0T; the S-Line package has been discontinued (due to the S-Line exterior now being standard); the Wine Red interior color is now available on the 3.2 model with Pearl nappa leather seats; and 18-inch, 5-spoke wheels (with all-season tires) are available on the 2.0T and 3.2.

The S4 Cabriolet has standard genuine silk Nappa full-leather seats; heated, 12-way power front seats; 3-spoke, leather, multi-function steering wheel; 340-hp, 4.2-liter V-8 engine; 6-speed manual transmission; quattro permanent AWD; electronic stability control; speed-sensitive steering; and a sport suspension. Options include a Tiptronic automatic transmission; heated rear seats; carbon fiber trim; 4-position driver's side memory; and a convenience package, with HomeLink, rain/light sensor, auto-dimming exterior and interior mirror with compass, 18-inch quattro 7-double spoke alloy wheels, Bose premium sound with AudioPilot, memory driver's seat/exterior mirrors, and adaptive front lighting.

Powertrain
The 2009 Audi A4 sedan is offered with a choice of 4- or 6-cylinder powerplants, while the S4 Cabriolet is available with a V-8 engine. The standard A4 engine is an all-new, turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder that generates 211 hp at 5300-6000 rpm and 258 lb.-ft. of torque at 1500-4200 rpm. In the FWD A4 ("FrontTrak" in Audi nomenclature), it is mated to a Multitronic CVT automatic. With Audi's quattro AWD system, it is offered with Audi's Tiptronic 6-speed automatic transmission or a 6-speed manual transmission. The Avant wagon includes the 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine mated to the Tiptronic 6-speed automatic and rear-biased asymmetrical quattro AWD as standard equipment. The 6-cylinder powerplant displaces 3.2 liters and is rated at 265 hp at 6500 rpm and 243 lb.-ft. of torque at 3000-5000 rpm. The only available transmission on the 6-cylinder model is Audi's Tiptronic 6-speed automatic. EPA fuel-economy estimates for the FWD 2.0 are 21 mpg city/27 mpg highway, and 19 mpg city/27 mpg highway for quattro, while the 3.2 is estimated at 17 mpg city/26 mpg highway and 17 city/25 highway (A4 Cabriolet).

The 2009 S4 Cabriolet is powered by a 4.2-liter, dual-overhead cam (DOHC) V-8 engine that pumps out 340 hp and 302 lb.-ft. of torque at 3500 rpm. A 6-speed manual transmission is standard, with optional Tiptronic automatic. EPA fuel economy for the 4.2-liter V-8 engine is estimated at 14 mpg city/21 mpg highway (manual) and 15 mpg city/23 mpg highway (automatic).

The standard 4-wheel disc brakes have been upgraded and improved on the 2009 model. Composite spheroidal-graphite and aluminum calipers clamp new high-performance brake pads that are 20 percent larger for improved brake feel and reduced stopping distances. The latest generation of ESP (electronic stability control) offers a smoother regulating action for less intrusive feedback for the driver, Audi says.

Safety
Occupants in the 2009 Audi A4 are protected by six standard air bags. Driver and front passenger are protected by front and side air bags while curtain air bags protect all outboard passengers. Two additional air bags, of a rear side design, are available optionally. Sensors in the seat rails determine the actual position of the seats and regulate the deployment of the air bags and belt force limiters based on the occupant's position within the vehicle, offering additional safety for drivers of smaller stature. Other safety equipment includes optional dynamic steering and adaptive cruise control.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the 2009 Audi A4 receives the agency's highest rating of 5 stars for frontal, side and rollover crash testing. As of this
