A four-door hatchback, the Audi A3 is available in the Premium and Premium Plus trim levels. The Premium package includes 17-inch alloy wheels, dual-zone automatic climate control, full power accessories, cruise control, 10-speaker audio system, and trip computer. Audi adjusted the powertrain selection for 2010. The V6 engine that was available on the 2009 model has been eliminated and replaced by a diesel option. The standard 2.0-liter turbocharged, four-cylinder engine generates 200 hp and 207 lb.-ft. of torque. Fuel economy is 21 mpg city, 30 mpg highway, and 24 mpg combined. The new four-cylinder 2.0-liter diesel engine, which is featured on the A3 TDI, makes 140 hp and 236 lb.-ft. of torque. EPA-estimated mileage for the diesel engine is 30 mpg city, 42 mpg highway, and 34 mpg combined.
The gasoline-powered A3 comes with front-wheel drive or Audi's Quattro all-wheel drive, while the diesel-powered TDI is front-wheel drive only. Front-wheel-drive models feature either a six-speed manual transmission or the S tronic six-speed transmission, which has manual and automatic modes. The all-wheel-drive and diesel models utilize the S tronic transmission.
In testing by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), the 2009 Audi A3 received "Good ratings" in frontal-offset and side-impact tests.
When first introduced, the 2010 Audi A3's base MSRP was $28,750 and the TDI started at $29,950.
