The 2012 Acura TL is a midsize luxury sedan with a slightly less prominent front end, compared with the 2011 model. The TL is available in two trims: the TL, which uses front-wheel drive, and the TL SH-AWD, which is more powerful and features all-wheel drive. Both trims come with 17-, 18-, or 19-inch wheels, a sunroof, and automatic Xenon headlights.
Base interior features on the Acura TL include leather upholstery, dual-zone automatic climate control, auto-dimming rearview mirror, Bluetooth connectivity, 8-speaker sound system, and power accessories. The TL SH-AWD has sportier suspension and steering, more powerful brakes, and upgraded seats with contrasting leather stitching.
On both trims, the Technology package includes upgraded leather upholstery, rearview camera, keyless ignition and entry, higher-performance tires, solar-sensing and GPS-linked climate control, navigation system, upgraded communications system, 10-speaker premium sound system, and a rear spoiler. The Advance package adds larger wheels, ventilated front seats, and a blind-spot warning system.
Under the Hood
The standard power plant for the 2012 Acura TL is a 3.5-liter, 280-horsepower V-6 engine with a new 6-speed automatic transmission that boosts fuel efficiency, according to the manufacturer. The TL SH-AWD trim uses Acura's proprietary Super Handling All-Wheel Drive system, coupled with a 3.7-liter V-6 engine rated at 305 horsepower. With the larger engine, a 6-speed manual transmission with hill-start assist is optional.
EPA fuel-economy figures for the 2012 Acura TL are:
- TL with base engine: 20/29/23 mpg (city/highway/combined)
- TL with 3.7-liter engine and automatic transmission: 18/26/21 mpg
- TL with 3.7-liter engine and manual transmission: 17/25/20 mpg
Standard safety features on the 2012 Acura TL include anti-lock disc brakes with brake assist, traction control, hill-hold assist, front-seat side air bags, and side curtain air bags. Other features are optional.
In government crash tests conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the 2012 Acura TL received 2 (out of 5) stars for front-impact crash protection; 4 stars for side-impact crash protection; 5 stars for rollover protection; and 3 stars overall. In tests conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), the TL received a "Good" rating--the Institute's highest--for all safety tests.
