Introduction
The 2014 RLX is Acura's new flagship sedan, replacing the previous RL in the model lineup. Acura says the RLX provides a full-size interior combined with midsize dimensions, and the new model will be offered with a traditional V-6 engine and front-wheel drive as well as with a Sport Hybrid Super Handling All-Wheel-Drive (SH-AWD) powertrain. The Acura RLX's closest competitors are the Audi A6, Cadillac XTS, Chrysler 300, Lexus ES, and Lincoln MKS.

Models and Features
Initially, the 2014 Acura RLX will be offered in a single level of specification that can be upgraded with four stair-step option packages. Highlights from the RLX's standard equipment list include 18-inch noise-reducing aluminum wheels, Active Sound Control, Active Noise Cancellation, automatic Jewel Eye LED headlights, a capless fuel-filling system, and a power sunroof. A forward-collision warning system and a lane-departure warning system are also standard.

Inside, the RLX is equipped with leather upholstery, a stitched leather dashboard cover, heated 12-way power-adjustable front seats, power tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, LED gauge illumination, 10-speaker Acura/ELS premium audio system, and triple-zone automatic climate control. Additionally, the RLX includes Bluetooth connectivity, Aha Radio and Pandora capability, a 7-inch multi-use display touch screen, 8-inch color infotainment screen, multi-angle reversing camera display, and a keyless Smart Entry system with push-button starting.

Options and Packages
Choose the Navigation package and the 2014 Acura RLX includes a navigation system with voice-recognition technology, next-generation AcuraLink services, upgraded Bluetooth functionality, a GPS-linked climate control system, and a color multi-information display screen. The Technology package adds 19-inch noise-reducing aluminum wheels, premium leather seats, Ebony woodgrain interior accents, and an upgraded Acura/ELS audio system with 14 speakers. The Smart Entry system works for all four doors instead of just the two front doors, and this option package contains a blind-spot monitoring system, acoustic windshield and side window glass, rain-sensing wipers, and power-retractable side mirrors.

The Krell Audio package adds more than just a Krell "ultra-premium" audio system. This package also contains a power rear window sunshade and manual rear side window sunshades. The 2014 RLX can also be optioned with an Advance package containing adaptive cruise control with Low Speed Follow, a collision-mitigation braking system, lane-keeping assist system, front and rear park-assist sensors, ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, rear-seat footwell lighting, and auto-dimming side mirrors.

Under the Hood
An "Earth Dreams" 3.5-liter V-6 engine with Variable Cylinder Management (VCM) is standard equipment for the 2014 Acura RLX. The VCM system allows the engine to operate on fewer cylinders under low driving-load conditions in order to conserve fuel. The V-6 generates 310 horsepower at 6,500 rpm and 272 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,500 rpm, delivered to the front wheels through a 6-speed automatic transmission with Sequential SportShift manual control and paddle shifters on the steering wheel. Acura says that 90% of peak torque is available between 2,000 rpm and 6,600 rpm.

After the Acura RLX's initial debut, a new Sport Hybrid SH-AWD powertrain will be available. The system will pair a V-6 engine with front and rear electric assist motors to provide all-wheel drive and greater combined horsepower and torque than the standard powertrain.

All 2014 RLX models are equipped with Precision All-Wheel Steer (P-AWS). This system continuously evaluates driving conditions and automatically calculates how much independent rear-wheel toe angle adjustment is necessary to enhance handling. Agile Handling Assist actively brakes the RLX to tighten a cornering line in turns and curves.

Fuel Economy
As rated by the EPA, the 2014 Acura RLX with the standard V-6 engine and front-wheel drive is expected to return 20 mpg in the city, 31 mpg on the highway, and 24 mpg in combined driving. Ratings for the Sport Hybrid SH-AWD are not available as this overview is written.

Safety Ratings and Technology
Acura has employed its Advanced Compatibility Engineering II (ACE II) body structure design for the new 2014 RLX, and says that this car is expected to receive top crash-test ratings from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). As this overview is written, neither the NHTSA nor the IIHS has performed official crash tests on the 2014 RLX.

Numerous safety technologies are offered for the RLX, and the adaptive cruise control with Low Speed Follow system is designed to operate in stop-and-go traffic situations. The RLX is also equipped with Automatic Brake Hold technology, which holds the car motionless for up to 10 minutes without requiring the driver to maintain pressure on the brake pedal, and e-pretensioners for the front seat belts, which reduce tension under normal driving conditions to add comfort but tighten based on certain braking and yaw movement measurements in anticipation of a potential collision.
