Overview

What's New for 2014:

  • Several new standard features
  • Price rises $1,000 due to extra equipment

Introduction
The 2014 Acura ILX is a compact entry-level luxury sedan sharing a platform with the Honda Civic. The ILX offers much more standard equipment than the Civic, and can be equipped with exclusive features unavailable for the Honda. Because of the 2014 ILX's relatively low price point, it has few direct competitors, but this segment is heating up with the addition of the redesigned Audi A3, entry-level BMW 320i with lowered price, and the new Mercedes-Benz CLA250.

Models and Features
Acura offers the ILX in standard and Hybrid model series. Details regarding the 2014 ILX Hybrid will be available in the fall of 2013.

For 2014, the non-hybrid versions gain several new features as standard equipment, including 17-inch aluminum wheels, leather upholstery with leatherette door panel trim, heated front seats, 8-way power driver's seat, multi-angle reversing camera, subwoofer for the sound system, and Active Noise Cancellation technology. These features join standard equipment highlights including dual-zone automatic climate control with air filtration and humidity control, keyless access and push-button ignition, power sunroof, and more. The ILX also comes standard with a 360-watt audio system with 7 speakers, satellite radio, Bluetooth connectivity with music streaming and SMS text messaging capabilities, USB and iPod connections, and a Pandora Internet radio interface.

Options and Packages
When buying a 2014 ILX, customers choose between a Premium package and a Technology package. The Premium package adds fog lights, HID headlights, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror. The Technology package equips the ILX with a voice-recognition navigation system that includes AcuraLink real-time traffic and weather reports, premium Acura/ELS surround-sound audio system, GPS-linked solar-sensing climate control system, and a 15-gigabyte media storage hard-drive with Song by Voice technology.

The ILX is also available with a larger, more powerful 4-cylinder engine and a 6-speed manual transmission, components identical to those installed in the Honda Civic Si model. Acura offers this power upgrade only with the Premium package, and choosing this version of the ILX also adds gray contrast stitching for the seats, red instrument lighting, and stainless steel pedals.

In addition to these option packages, the ILX can be equipped with numerous dealer-installed upgrades.

Under the Hood
The Acura ILX is equipped with a standard 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine making 150 horsepower at 6,500 rpm and 140 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,300 rpm. A 5-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters is standard with this engine, which drives the car's front wheels. The optional 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine generates 201 horsepower at 7,000 rpm and 170 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,400 rpm. It is offered only with a 6-speed manual gearbox.

Acura also sells the ILX Hybrid, but says it will release details about the 2014 version of this model at a later date. Last year, the ILX Hybrid paired a 1.5-liter 4-cylinder gasoline engine with an electric assist motor and a lithium-ion battery to develop a combined 111 horsepower at 5,500 rpm and 127 lb.-ft. of torque between 1,000 rpm and 3,500 rpm. A continuously variable transmission (CVT) with paddle shifters came standard for the 2013 ILX Hybrid.

Fuel Economy
Both of the ILX's gasoline engines require premium unleaded fuel, per Acura. The EPA says that mileage estimates range from a low of 22 mpg in the city for the 2.4-liter engine and the manual gearbox to a high of 35 mpg on the highway for the 2.0-liter engine and the automatic transmission. The 2014 ILX Hybrid will return 39 mpg in the city and 38 mpg on the highway, according to the EPA.

Safety Ratings and Technology
As this overview is written, neither the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) nor the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has rated the 2014 Acura ILX for crash protection.

For 2014, the ILX is equipped with a multi-angle reversing camera as standard equipment. Last year, this was an optional upgrade over a simpler standard camera. Technology-related options for this model include Song by Voice recall from a 15GB music hard drive and a GPS-linked solar sensing climate control system that can increase or decrease heating and cooling depending on sun angle and the vehicle's direction of travel.
