New for 2014: Subaru

By: Jeff Youngs, 11/26/2013
2014 Subaru Overview

Long recognized as an all-wheel drive (AWD) all the time brand, Subaru broke with tradition in 2013 by introducing the sporty rear-wheel-drive (RWD) BRZ. For 2014, the company is disrupting the status quo once again with the debut of its first alternatively powered model, the XV Crosstrek Hybrid. Using a 4-cylinder Boxer-style engine paired with an electric motor and nickel-metal hydride battery pack, this four-wheeling crossover is expected to average up to 31 mpg in combined city and highway driving.

The XV Crosstrek changes little for 2014, adding only a smartphone-linked infotainment system. This same bit of technology makes its way into other 2014 Subarus, like the BRZ, Impreza, and WRX/STI. Updates for the 2014 Tribeca 7-passenger crossover are limited to a standard moonroof and an option package within which buyers will find a rear-seat entertainment system, navigation system, and more.

The transformation for the 2014 Subaru Legacy is more drastic, thanks to a revised continuously variable transmission (CVT), the addition of the infotainment system, and an Eyesight safety feature available on more trim levels. These same revisions have been made to the 2014 Subaru Outback.

Completely redesigned for 2014, the Subaru Forester now boasts more passenger and cargo space than the previous model, improved fuel economy and a new available turbocharged engine, two new transmissions, a revised AWD system, and new options including a power-operated tailgate and push-button start.

2014 Subaru BRZ
Subaru's lone RWD model, the 4-passenger BRZ coupe is a near duplicate of the jointly developed Scion FR-S. The duo debuted for the 2013 model year; for 2014, the BRZ adds a redesigned keyless remote and a smartphone-integrated infotainment system. Buyers can opt for a base or Limited trim level, though all variants are equipped with a standard Boxer-style 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine that delivers 200 horsepower and 151 lb.-ft. of torque. Transmission choices include a 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic with steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters.

What's New:
  • Standard smartphone-integrated infotainment system
  • Redesigned keyless entry remote

2014 Subaru Forester
According to Subaru, consumers have complained about a lack of rear legroom in the Forester model, so as part of a complete redesign for the 2014 model year, that particular dimension has been stretched by nearly 4 inches. Likewise, cargo space has grown considerably, up more than 6 cubic feet to 74.7.

The 2014 lineup includes 2.5i, 2.5i Premium, 2.5i Limited, and 2.5i Touring trims, all of which continue to be powered by the Forester's base 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine that produces 170 horsepower and 174 lb.-ft. of torque. However, the gearbox selections have been upgraded from 2013's 5-speed manual and 4-speed automatic to 2014's 6-speed manual or a CVT. Enthusiasts will likely be drawn to the new 2.0XT Premium and 2.0XT Touring models, fitted with a new turbocharged, direct-injection, 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine that generates 250 horsepower and 258 lb.-ft. of torque. EPA ratings prove that all 2014 Subaru Foresters offer better fuel economy than their predecessors.

Other changes for the redesigned Forester include a revised AWD system with hill-hold control, efficient electric power steering, larger standard alloy wheels, added front active head restraints, and a driver's knee air bag. Among the new available features are Subaru's Eyesight safety technology, push-button start, smartphone-linked infotainment system, and a power-operated tailgate.

What's New:
  • Redesigned for 2014
  • Increased passenger and cargo space
  • More powerful optional turbocharged engine
  • Improved fuel economy
  • Upgraded transmissions
  • Updated AWD system and chassis components
  • Added standard safety features
  • Optional EyeSight safety system
  • Available power-operated tailgate, push-button start, and smartphone-linked infotainment system

2014 Subaru Impreza
Unlike the redesigned Forester, the Subaru Impreza returns for 2014 with only minor changes. Among them are the addition of a standard rearview camera on the Limited trim level and a new smartphone-linked infotainment system paired with the optional navigation system.

Subaru offers the AWD, 5-passenger 2014 Impreza in 4-door sedan and 5-door wagon body styles, and in trim levels including 2.0i, 2.0i Premium, 2.0i Limited, and 2.0i Sport Limited (5-door only). All are equipped with a 148-horsepower, 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine mated with a 5-speed manual gearbox or a CVT.

What's New:
  • Rearview camera standard on Limited trim levels
  • Optional smartphone-linked infotainment system

2014 Subaru Legacy
Though a redesigned model is expected to debut for the 2015 model year, the 2014 Subaru Legacy sedan soldiers on with a variety of upgrades that should help attract the attention of potential buyers. Like other examples in the lineup, the 2014 Legacy benefits from the introduction of a smartphone-linked infotainment system, upgraded alloy wheels, and a more responsive CVT, as well as an Eyesight safety system offered with an LCD gauge display which is available on a broader selection of trim levels. Those include the 2.5i, 2.5i Premium, 2.5i Sport, 2.5i Limited, and the 3.6R Limited, with power coming from a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder or 3.6-liter 6-cylinder engine.

What's New:
  • Broader availability of Eyesight safety technology
  • Upgraded LCD gauge display available with Eyesight system
  • Updated CVT
  • 17-inch alloy wheels for base model
  • Smartphone-linked infotainment system bundled with optional navigation system
  • Power Moonroof package adds rearview camera

2014 Subaru Outback
Essentially a raised wagon version of the Legacy, the Subaru Outback returns for 2014 with changes identical to those of its sedan counterpart. Most notable among them are the availability of a new smartphone-linked infotainment system, upgraded CVT designed to be more responsive, and greater access to the Eyesight safety system, which had previously been available only to buyers of top-of-the-line Limited variants.

As is the case with the Legacy, the 2014 Subaru Outback's lineup consists of 2.5i, 2.5i Premium, 2.5i Limited, and 3.6R Limited trim levels. Depending on the version selected, power comes from either a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder or 3.6-liter 6-cylinder engine.

What's New:
  • Broader availability of Eyesight safety technology
  • Upgraded LCD gauge display available with Eyesight system
  • CVT reengineered to be more responsive
  • 17-inch alloy wheels and fog lights for base model
  • Optional navigation system now includes smartphone-linked infotainment system
  • Power Moonroof package adds rearview camera

2014 Subaru Tribeca
The 2014 Subaru Tribeca crossover, available in one 7-passenger Limited trim level, has been upgraded with a standard moonroof and a feature-laden option package that includes a navigation system, rear-seat entertainment system, and a premium audio system. Under the 2014 Tribeca's hood is a 3.6-liter 6-cylinder engine that delivers 256 horsepower and 247 lb.-ft. of torque, all of which is transmitted to the road via a 5-speed automatic transmission.

What's New:
  • Standard moonroof
  • Bundled option package includes navigation system, rear-seat entertainment system, and premium audio system

2014 Subaru WRX/STI
Subaru will be using the 2015 model year to launch an all-new WRX model, meaning changes for 2014 are relatively minor. In fact, the only change is the addition of the optional smartphone-linked infotainment system.

Based on the Impreza, the 2014 WRX is available in 4-door sedan and 5-door wagon body styles. Trim levels include the 265-horsepower WRX, WRX Premium, and WRX Limited, as well as the 305-horsepower WRX STI and WRX STI Limited.

What's New:
  • Smartphone-linked infotainment system bundled with optional navigation system

2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek
Since the XV Crosstrek made its initial debut for the 2013 model year, updates for 2014 are expectedly minimal, and limited to the addition of the new infotainment system.

However, that carried-over variant is no longer the only Crosstrek in town, as evidenced by the all-new 2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek Hybrid. Touted as the company's first hybrid model, this small crossover has earned EPA fuel-economy ratings of 29/33/31 mpg (city/highway/combined) and features a powertrain consisting of a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine, electric motor, CVT, 13.5-kw nickel-metal hybrid battery, and a fully electric EV driving mode. The XV Crosstrek Hybrid also benefits from aerodynamic-enhancing active grille shutters and standard amenities including heated mirrors and front seats, as well as a rearview camera.

What's New:
  • Smartphone-linked infotainment system
  • All-new XV Crosstrek Hybrid model
