New for 2014: Volvo

By: Jeff Youngs, 11/20/2013
Volvo enters the 2014 model year with five models, most of which have been updated with fresh styling, new safety technologies, and added standard features. The S60 sedan, for example, is accented by a redesigned front end and now offers cyclist detection as part of its optional pedestrian-detection system, Blind Spot Information System package with cross-traffic alert, and a digital gauge cluster with driver-selectable Elegance, Eco, and Performance modes. Many of these changes carry over to the 2014 S80 sedan, which also gets an available software upgrade that provides faster shifts when the transmission is operated in Sport mode.

Over on the crossover front, the 2014 Volvo XC60 and XC70 models feature revised styling, new colors, the digital gauge cluster, and access to the new safety systems. Select versions of the XC70 also offer the more responsive transmission. The XC90 was heavily updated for 2013, so the 2014 model returns with only minor revisions.

If it seems as though the Volvo lineup is looking a little lean, that's likely due to the absence of the C30 coupe and C70 convertible. Both models have been discontinued.

2014 Volvo S60
Volvo's smallest and most affordable sedan, the S60, has been updated for 2014 with a completely restyled front end, upgraded interior materials, three new exterior paint colors, and options including a Blind Spot Information package that also features rear cross-traffic alert, front and rear park-assist sensors, and what Volvo calls Lane Change Merge Aid technology. A Technology package has been carried over from 2013, but now boasts a new cyclist-detection component.

Buyers have the choice of front-wheel-drive (FWD) base T5, T5 Premier, T5 Premier Plus, and T5 Platinum trim levels. All-wheel-drive (AWD) S60 T6 models are available in base, Premier Plus, Platinum, R-Design, and R-Design Platinum configurations.

What's New:
  • Revised styling
  • Upgraded interior materials
  • Added standard features
  • Additional and enhanced safety features
  • Optional 18-inch Sport and Blind Spot Information packages
  • Bright Silver Metallic, Power Blue Metallic, and Crystal White Metallic paint colors
  • Customizable digital gauge cluster, sport seats, and paddle shifters on select trim levels

2014 Volvo S80
Like the smaller S60, the 2014 Volvo S80 sedan arrives with updated exterior styling. In this case, changes have been made to the bumpers, headlights and LED taillights, grille, and standard 17-inch alloy wheels. Inside, designers have added a redesigned 3-spoke steering wheel and a digital gauge cluster with driver-selectable modes. Options have also been upgraded for 2014, with the Technology package gaining cyclist-detection functionality and bright active HID headlights added as an individual option.

The 2014 Volvo S80 is offered in FWD 3.2 base, 3.2 Premier Plus, and 3.2 Platinum trim levels, all equipped with a 240-horsepower, 3.2-liter 6-cylinder engine. Shoppers considering the S80 also have the choice of AWD T6, T6 Premier Plus, and T6 Platinum variants fitted with a turbocharged, 3.0-liter 6-cylinder engine that delivers 300 horsepower. All S80s features a 6-speed automatic transmission, though T6s benefit from a new software change that provides even quicker shifts when operated in Sport mode.

What's New:
  • Revised styling
  • Upgraded option packages
  • Added standard features
  • Additional and enhanced safety features
  • More responsive transmission (T6 AWD)
  • Crystal White Metallic paint color
  • Customizable digital instrument panel

The smallest of Volvo's three crossover models, the 2014 XC60 differs from its predecessor courtesy of a redesigned hood and front fenders, grille and headlights, standard 18-inch alloy wheels, and three exterior paint colors. A new 3-spoke steering wheel has made its way to the XC60's interior; on higher trim levels, the list of standard features now includes a digital gauge cluster, auto-dimming rearview mirror, rearview camera, power-folding mirrors, paddle shifters, and a traction control system improved to provide better handling in corners.

Option upgrades for 2014 include a new Sport package with 20-inch alloy wheels and sport seats, Technology package with cyclist detection, Blind Spot Information System package, and an Inscription package consisting of high-grade leather upholstery and trim, upgraded headliner, unique floor mats, and special aluminum door sills.

2014 Volvo XC70
Thanks to redesigned headlights and taillights, front and rear bumpers, and standard 17-inch alloy wheels, the Volvo X70 has a fresh look for 2014. Sporty R-Design variants add a folding front passenger seat, universal garage door opener, and a digital compass as standard equipment.
