Introduction
Given its full redesign in 2012, the Volkswagen Touareg arrives with very few changes for 2013. They include an extra 15 horsepower from the available diesel engine, updated wheel designs and interior trim, and LED taillights on the hybrid model.

Exterior Features
Dubbed V6 Sport, the 2013 Volkswagen Touareg's base model is equipped with adaptive automatic HID headlights, fog lights, heated power-adjustable turn signal mirrors, rear spoiler, heated windshield washer nozzles, power tailgate, 18-inch alloy wheels, and a rear diffuser. A visually identical V6 Sport with Navigation trim level is also offered, as is a V6 Lux differentiated by 19-inch alloy wheels, power tilt/slide moonroof, and a memory function for the outside mirrors. These variants are followed by the Touareg V6 Executive, which features 20-inch alloy wheels and front and rear park-assist sensors.

TDI Sport, TDI Sport with Navigation, TDI Lux, and TDI Executive trim levels are available and mirror those of the V6, with the exception of a turbocharged direct-injection (TDI) diesel engine under the hood.

The priciest of all 2013 Volkswagen Touareg variants is the Hybrid. Here, buyers get the Executive's features, as well as a 380-horsepower hybrid powertrain, 19-inch alloy wheels, power tilt/slide moonroof, and new LED taillights.

Interior Features
Inside, the 2013 Volkswagen Touareg V6 Sport features dual-zone climate control, ambient lighting, leatherette upholstery, glovebox cooler, 60/40 split-folding and sliding rear seat, and stainless steel accents. A handy 115-volt power outlet is also included, along with an 8-speaker touch-screen sound system that boasts satellite radio service and an iPod cable, leather-wrapped tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel with integrated audio controls, Bluetooth connectivity, and heated power front seats with 8-way adjustment. The Touareg V6 Sport with Navigation adds a touch-screen navigation system and rearview camera.

Volkswagen's large crossover moves a bit further upscale with the V6 Lux and its burl walnut trim, power-folding rear seat, genuine leather upholstery, and heated power front seats with memory and 12-way adjustment. The Touareg V6 Executive bolsters the list of standard features even more by introducing a 620-watt premium audio package, push-button start, heated rear seats, and a heated steering wheel.

Again, the TDIs' only difference lies under the hood.

The 2013 Volkswagen Touareg Hybrid, as does the V6 Executive, has a push-button start system and heated rear seats. This model also includes a power tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel.

Optional Features
All of the 2013 Volkswagen Touareg's available features are included as standard equipment on one or more of the many trim levels. However, buyers do have the choice of several dealer-installed accessories, such as splash guards, upgraded floor mats, and towing accessories.

Under the Hood
The 2013 Volkswagen Touareg's base engine is a direct-injection 3.6-liter V-6 that delivers 280 horsepower and 266 lb.-ft. of torque. An AWD system is standard on all Touaregs, as is an 8-speed automatic transmission with a sport mode.

Buyers who want the most efficient 2013 Touareg should direct their attention to TDI models equipped with the 3.0-liter V-6 diesel engine featuring turbocharged direct injection. Output measures 240 horsepower and 406 lb.-ft. of torque.

For the Touareg Hybrid, Volkswagen has joined the 3.0-liter V-6 engine with a supercharger, electric motor, and a 288-volt nickel-metal hydride battery. Net output measures 380 horsepower and 428 lb.-ft. of torque.

Fuel Economy
EPA fuel-economy estimates for the 2013 Volkswagen Touareg are:

  • Touareg with 3.6-liter V-6 engine: 17/23/19 mpg (city/highway/combined)
  • Touareg TDI: 20/29/23 mpg
  • Touareg Hybrid: 20/24/21 mpg

Safety
The 2013 Volkswagen Touareg's standard safety features include 6 air bags, rain-sensing wipers, traction control, LED daytime running lights, hill-descent assist, 4-wheel anti-lock vented disc brakes, electronic brake-force distribution, and brake assist.

In tests conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), the 2013 Volkswagen Touareg received a "Good" rating--the Institute's highest--for moderate overlap frontal-impact crash protection; the Touareg also received a "Top Safety Pick" designation from the Institute. As this preview is written, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has not rated the crashworthiness of the 2013 Volkswagen Touareg.

Technology
The 2013 Touareg's AWD system, known as 4Motion, features a Torsen limited-slip rear differential that distributes up to 40 percent of the powertrain's available torque to the front wheels and 60 percent to the rear, depending on road conditions.
