2013 Mazda CX-5 Preview

The 2013 Mazda CX-5 is the first model to feature the automaker's new "Kodo" design theme, which will ultimately characterize all future Mazdas. Translated, "Kodo" means "Soul of Motion," according to Mazda.
Mazda claims that the new 2013 CX-5 has the longest wheelbase in its segment, and the company cites generous rear leg, knee, and foot room as a benefit. Cargo space measures 34.1 cubic feet behind the rear seat and 64.8 cubic feet with the rear seat folded. A 60/40-split folding rear seat is standard on the CX-5 Sport model, while Touring and Grand Touring versions feature a more flexible 40/20/40-split folding seat.
Three trim levels give buyers access to a variety of features. The standard CX-5 Sport can be upgraded with an automatic transmission, Bluetooth connectivity and streaming audio capability, and a navigation system. The Touring trim offers an available Bose premium sound system, power sunroof, navigation system, and active bi-Xenon headlights. Grand Touring models include leather seats, automatic climate control, and 19-inch alloy wheels, and can be upgraded with an advanced keyless entry system.
Under the Hood
A direct-injected, 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine is the only powerplant available for the 2013 Mazda CX-5. It makes 155 horsepower, and is charged with motivating a crossover SUV that weighs just over 3,200 pounds in Sport trim with front-wheel drive. A 6-speed manual transmission is standard on the Sport model. A 6-speed automatic is optional on the CX-5 Sport, and standard on Touring and Grand Touring trims. All-wheel drive is available on models with the automatic transmission.
As this vehicle preview is written, Mazda is reporting preliminary fuel economy estimates. Final EPA data is forthcoming:
- Front-wheel drive with manual transmission: 26/35 mpg (city/highway)
- Front-wheel drive with automatic transmission: 26/32 mpg
- All-wheel drive with automatic transmission: 25/31 mpg
Mazda installs 4-wheel-disc brakes with electronic brake-force distribution and brake assist on every 2013 CX-5, along with a traction and stability control system, a hill-start assist system, and six air bags. Safety-related options include a rearview camera, active bi-Xenon headlights, and a blind-spot warning system.
At the time of publication, crash testing had not been performed for the new 2013 Mazda CX-5.
