Introduction
The Lexus GX 460 is the maker's midsize luxury SUV. It features a 4.6-liter V-8 engine (hence the name 460), which replaced the original 4.7-liter engine in the first-generation SUV (which, naturally, was called the GX 470), and full-time 4-wheel drive (4WD). The 2013 Lexus GX 460 carries over from the 2012 model with no significant changes. It's available in a base model or a Premium trim level. The Lexus GX 460 competes with luxury SUVs such as the BMW X5, Mercedes-Benz M-Class, and Acura MDX.

Exterior Features
The 2013 Lexus GX 460 is available in seven exterior colors: Tungsten Pearl, Starfire Pearl, Satin Cashmere Metallic, Knight's Armor Pearl, Fire Agate Pearl, Claret Mica, and Black Onyx. Standard exterior equipment includes 18-inch alloy wheels, running boards, sunroof, keyless entry and ignition, and heated side mirrors. The Premium trim level adds an adaptive variable suspension that provides three different driving experiences, and allows height adjustment of the rear end. Side mirrors are auto-dimming on the premium trim, and xenon headlights are standard.

Interior Features
Standard interior features on the 2013 Lexus GX 460 include leather upholstery (with heated and ventilated front seats) in sepia, ecru, or black, with woodgrain trim; 8-way power driver's seat with lumbar adjustments; leather-wrapped tilt/telescoping steering wheel; dual-zone climate control; 9-speaker sound system; power-folding third-row seats; and Bluetooth connectivity. The Premium trim level steps up to a heated, woodgrain-decorated steering wheel; different leather upholstery with heated second-row seats; and upgraded climate control. With all rear seats lowered, total cargo space comes to 92 cubic feet.

Optional Features
Many of the standard upgrades of the Premium trim are available as options on the base model. A navigation system is available; so is a Mark Levinson 17-speaker, 330-watt, premium surround-sound audio system. The SportDesign package includes upgraded alloy wheels with liquid silver high-gloss finish, an F Sport grille, double-walled stainless steel exhaust tip with chrome finish, and carpeted floor mats with logo. HID headlights, tonneau cover, paint protection film, roof crossbars, tow hitch, ball mount, cargo mat, cargo net, and many other individual accessories are available.

Under the Hood
The 2013 Lexus GX 460 is powered by a 4.6-liter, 301-horsepower V-8 engine that produces 329 lb.-ft. of torque. It works with full-time 4WD and a 6-speed automatic transmission. With the proper equipment, the GX 460 can tow up to 6,500 pounds.

Fuel Economy
EPA fuel-economy estimates for the 2013 Lexus GX 460 are 15/20/17 mpg (city/highway/combined).

Safety
All 2013 Lexus GX 460 models feature front and rear side air bags, side curtain air bags, dual front knee air bags, anti-lock disc brakes, stability control, and traction control. Hill-start assist and downhill controls are standard; the Wide-View Front & Side Monitor System/Pre-Collision System with Driver Attention Monitor package includes lane-departure alert, intelligent high-beam headlights, and crawl control. Other safety features are also optional. The GX includes a proximity warning system for pedestrians and cyclists.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has not yet released its safety ratings for the 2013 Lexus GX 460. In tests conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), the 2013 Lexus GX 460 received "Good" ratings--the Institute's highest--for frontal-offset, side-impact, and rear-impact crash protection, as well as for roof strength. Additionally, the Institute has named the 2013 Lexus GX 460 a "Top Safety Pick" for 2013.

Technology
The Lexus GX 460 employs Toyota's Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (KDSS), which the maker says can reduce maximum body-lean angle by as much as 50%. Using hydraulic cylinders acting on each stabilizer bar and linked by a pressure-sensing valve, KDSS reduces the degree of sway stiffness provided by the stabilizer bars in response to changing road conditions and driver inputs.
