Introduction
The Volvo S80 is Volvo's flagship model: a misdize luxury sedan, slightly larger than the S60. It was first introduced to the U.S. market in 1998, and is now in its second generation. Volvo emphasizes the S80's safety, smooth ride, and many luxury features. In the United States, the Volvo S80's competitors include the BMW 5 Series, Audi 6, Mercedes-Benz E-Class, Hyundai Genesis, and Acura TL, among others. The 2013 Volvo S80 is offered in two models: the 3.2 and the T6. They're available in the base, Premier Plus, and Platinum trim levels. The 3.2 comes standard with FWD; the T6 employs AWD.

Exterior Features
The 2013 Volvo S80 is offered in eight colors: basic black and white, and (at an additional charge) metallic light blue, dark blue, bronze, black, silver, and grey. The base 3.2 model features 17-inch alloy wheels, automatic headlights with headlight washers, fog lights, automatic wipers, keyless entry and ignition, and heated mirrors. The Premier Plus trim level steps up to active dual xenon headlights and front and rear park-assist sensors. The S80 T6 model adds 18-inch alloy wheels and a sunroof, both of which are optional on the S80 3.2.

Interior Features
Standard interior features on the Volvo S80 include dual-zone climate control, cruise control, leather upholstery, 8-speaker sound system, leather-wrapped tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, auto-dimming rearview mirror, power front seats, split-folding rear seats with trunk pass-through, and full power accessories. The Premier Plus trim level adds an integrated garage door opener, digital compass, and accessory prep cable, and the Platinum trim level adds a 12-speaker sound system, navigation system, and rearview camera. The S80 T6 comes with an optional adaptive suspension system that offers three settings. The T6 is available with a sportier suspension, distinctive styling elements, a sport steering wheel, and sport seats. Trunk space is 14.9 cubic feet.

Optional Features
Several option packages are available with the Volvo S80. A Climate package adds heat to the front and rear seats, heated windshield washer nozzles, and Volvo's proprietary air filtration system. The Technology package includes adaptive cruise control, automatic high-beam headlights, and a variety of extra safety features. The T6 offers the Inscription package of options, which adds more leather trim to the interior, plus upgraded leather upholstery and ventilated front seats. The Dynamic package (also restricted to the T6) includes the sport suspension, seats, and steering wheel, as well as a sport mode for the transmission and special aluminum interior trim. Optional equipment on all models includes a blind-spot monitoring system, remote ignition, reversible cargo compartment mat, rear spoiler, illuminated sill moldings, mud flaps, and load bars.

Under the Hood
The Volvo S80 3.2 is powered by a 3.2-liter, 240-horsepower, inline 6-cylinder engine that produces 236 lb.-ft. of torque. Front-wheel drive and a 6-speed automatic transmission are standard; AWD is optional. The S80 T6 features a 3.0-liter, turbocharged, inline 6-cylinder engine rated at 300 horsepower and 325 lb.-ft. of torque, which works with AWD.

Fuel Economy
EPA fuel-economy estimates for the 2013 Volvo S80 are:

  • S80 with 3.2-liter engine: 19/28/23 mpg (city/highway/combined)
  • S80 with turbocharged 3.0-liter engine: 18/25/21 mpg

Safety
Standard safety features on the Volvo S80 include anti-lock brakes, active front head restraints, front side air bags, and side curtain air bags. A blind-spot monitoring system and other safety enhancements are optional--including a proprietary pedestrian detection system that can apply full braking force in emergency situations.

The results of crash tests conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) have not yet been revealed for the 2013 Volvo S80. In tests conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), the 2013 S80 received "Good" ratings--the Institute's highest--for all impact protection tests.

Technology
Volvo's optional Polestar Performance software enhances throttle response, torque and power, according to the manufacturer, without increasing the certified fuel consumption or affecting the vehicle's original warranty. The software re-calibrates hundreds of parameters that control the engine to increase the turbocharger boost pressure, re-optimize the ignition and fuel-mapping, and re-calibrate the throttle response. Polestar Performance can be installed by any Volvo dealer.
