Exterior Features
To mark a year of change, Subaru has modified the 2013 Legacy sedan's styling with a new grille, revised headlights, restyled front bumper, and fresh wheel designs. The turbocharged Legacy 2.5GT model is discontinued. Remaining models include the Legacy 2.5i and Legacy 3.6R in base, Premium and Limited levels of trim.

Interior Features
Bluetooth hands-free calling and music streaming is standard for the 2013 Subaru Legacy, along with a USB/iPod connection and new cloth upholstery. The Limited trim gains rear-seat air conditioning vents, new dark glossy simulated wood trim, electroluminescent gauges with a 3.5-inch color information display, and Keyless Access & Start technology this year.

Optional Features
Choose a 2013 Subaru Legacy with Premium trim, and it will include a 10-way power driver's seat, leather-wrapped steering wheel, and 17-inch aluminum wheels. The Limited models are equipped with perforated leather seats, heated front seats and side mirrors, dual-zone automatic climate control, and a premium Harmon/Kardon audio system. A power sunroof can be added to Premium and Limited models, while a navigation system with a rearview camera is available only on the Legacy Limited.

Under the Hood

A new 173-horsepower, 2.5-liter Boxer 4-cylinder engine powers 2013 Legacy models wearing a 2.5i designation. The new engine produces 3 added horsepower compared to last year, and 4 additional lb.-ft. of torque for a total of 174 lb.-ft. Subaru notes that the new Legacy 2.5i's torque curve is broader than before, too.

The Legacy 2.5i includes a 6-speed manual gearbox and all-wheel drive in base trim. Premium and Limited trims are equipped with a new second-generation version of Subaru's Lineartronic continuously variable transmission (CVT). The CVT is optional on the base model.

The Legacy 3.6R continues with a 256-horsepower, 3.6-liter Boxer 6-cylinder engine. This model is also equipped with all-wheel drive, and features a conventional 5-speed automatic transmission. Paddle shifters allow for manual gear-change control, and when used for downshifts the transmission provides a rev-matching function for smoother operation, Subaru says.

Fuel Economy
The EPA has not finalized fuel-economy ratings for the 2013 Subaru Legacy as this preview is published. Subaru expects the new 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine to get 24 mpg in the city and 32 mpg on the highway, for a combined rating of 27 mpg.

Safety
Subaru adds a standard Brake Override system to the Legacy for 2013, which makes it impossible to brake and accelerate at the same time, the automaker says, and makes a rearview camera available on Limited models.

Subaru's new EyeSight driver-assist system is also available on the 2013 Legacy Limited trims. It includes adaptive cruise control, pre-collision braking, pedestrian detection, and lane-departure warning technologies.
