2015 Chevrolet Impala Preview

The Chevrolet Impala underwent an extensive redesign for 2014, so changes for 2015 are few. The Impala, a full-size sedan, has a long history, beginning with its iconic presence as an affordable "prestige car" in the late 1950s and early 1960s. It got smaller over the years, but the 10th generation, introduced for the 2014 model year, brought it back to full size. The Chevrolet Impala shares a platform with the Buick LaCrosse and the Cadillac XTS; its main competitors are the Toyota Avalon, Chrysler 300, Dodge Charger, and Ford Taurus. For 2015, the "mild hybrid" eAssist model has been discontinued, but its fuel-saving start/stop technology has been passed along to the base 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine.
The 2015 Chevrolet Impala comes in five trim levels (LS, 1LT, 2LT, 1LTZ, and 2LTZ) and nine exterior colors: white, silver, grey, black, deep blue, red, champagne, silver topaz metallic, and crystal red tintcoat. The buyer has a choice of steel or alloy 18-in. wheels, machine-faced or painted aluminum 19-in. wheels, or aluminum 20-in. wheels. The base model features halogen headlights. The 1LT trim level adds outside heated power-adjustable body-color mirrors with integrated turn signal indicators and ground illumination, and 18-in. painted-aluminum wheels. The 1LTZ trim adds lower bodyside chrome moldings and lower LED daytime running lights.
The base 2015 Chevrolet Impala includes Bluetooth wireless technology for select phones, 3-month trial of SiriusXM satellite radio, 6-months of OnStar Directions & Connections, premium cloth seating with 60/40 split-folding rear seat, and 8-way power-adjustable driver seat. The 1LT trim level adds Chevrolet MyLink Radio with 8-in. diagonal touch screen, Bluetooth audio streaming, SD card reader, two additional USB ports, 4-way adjustable front-seat head restraints, 2-way power-adjustable front passenger lumbar control, dual-zone automatic climate control, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob. The Impala 2LT upgrades to the 3.6-liter V-6 engine. The 1LTZ trim level features larger wheels, leather-appointed seating, keyless access with push-button start, rear-vision camera with rear park assist, remote vehicle starter system, 8-way power-adjustable front passenger seat, and heated front seats. The 1LTZ also includes several advanced safety features: forward-collision alert, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning, and side blind-zone alert. The 2LTZ features the same equipment but with the larger engine. Five styles of cloth upholstery and three colors of leather upholstery are available depending on trim level.
The Comfort and Convenience package includes ventilated driver and front passenger seats; heated steering wheel; power tilt-and-telescoping steering column; memory settings for the driver seat, outside mirrors, and steering wheel; universal home remote; auto-dimming inside rearview mirror; outside heated power-adjustable mirrors with turn signal indicators, ground illumination and driver-side auto-dimming feature; premium carpeted front and rear floor mats; and carpeted trunk mat. With that package, a Bose premium sound system with a 120-volt outlet is available at an additional charge. A sunroof, full-speed-range adaptive cruise control, pedal cover set, trunk organizer, and many other options are available.
Under the Hood
The 2015 Chevrolet Impala's base engine is a direct-injection, 2.5-liter 4-cylinder unit that produces 196 horsepower and 186 lb.-ft of torque. Available is a direct-injection, 305-horsepower, 3.6-liter V-6 engine that produces 263 lb.-ft. of torque. All 2015 Impalas feature a 6-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive.
The EPA has not published final fuel-economy numbers for the 2015 Chevrolet Impala, but the same 2.5-liter engine on the 2014 model returned 21 mpg city/31 mpg highway/25 mpg combined. The 3.6-liter engine returned 18/30/22 mpg. GM says the new start/stop technology is likely to slightly boost fuel efficiency, though the manufacturer has not provided any estimates.
In addition to 10 air bags, 4-wheel-disc anti-lock brakes, and a traction and stability control system, the 2015 Impala is equipped with OnStar telematics that includes a limited-time free subscription to Automatic Crash Notification service. This feature activates if the air bags deploy, putting an operator in touch with the Impala's occupants. Even if nobody can respond, the operator can dispatch rescue personnel to the car's exact location.
As of this writing, neither the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) nor the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has released its safety ratings for the 2015 Chevrolet Impala.
The 2015 Chevrolet Impala has dropped its hitherto available "mild hybrid" eAssist system?a 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine paired with a Lithium-ion battery and 15-kW electric motor--and has made start/stop technology standard on its base engine. Some of the technological features of the eAssist carry over into the start/stop system. GM says that, with eAssist, the fuel efficiency in city driving should rise to 22 mpg. According to GM, the system has been improved to lessen vibration and reduce the likelihood of repeated stops and starts in very slow traffic.
