Introduction
The 2014 BMW X5 is completely redesigned, lighter, quicker, and more fuel efficient than before while offering a range of new standard and optional information, entertainment, connectivity, communication, safety, and autonomous driving equipment. The midsize luxury SUV, which is offered with an optional third-row seat, goes on sale toward the end of 2013. Four models are heading to BMW showrooms, all carrying nomenclature that reflects their powertrains: sDrive35i, xDrive35i, xDrive35d, and xDrive50i.

Exterior Features
Designed to minimize aerodynamic drag to the greatest degree possible, the 2014 BMW X5 features numerous functional elements to help smooth airflow around the SUV's body. Standard equipment includes adaptive xenon headlights, LED fog lights, LED headlight accent rings, and LED taillights. The X5's split tailgate design returns for 2014, with the upper portion power-operated using the remote or a button on the dashboard. New colors include Sparkling Brown and Mineral White.

Buyers can choose a 2014 X5 in standard specification, or they can upgrade to the Luxury Line, xLine, or M Sport versions, each of which is equipped with a unique exterior appearance. Additionally, the 2014 X5 M Sport model adds performance enhancements including a sport suspension and a sport automatic transmission with paddle shifters.

Interior Features
Redesigned seats, bigger cupholders, a larger passenger cabin, and greater cargo capacity are the highlights of the redesigned 2014 BMW X5's new interior. Standard equipment includes Bluetooth connectivity, BMW Apps for iPhone technology, a navigation system with real-time traffic reports and touchpad control, a 10.2-inch color multi-media display, and black-panel touch technology for the audio and climate systems. Choose the X5 xDrive50i, and this luxury SUV is equipped with leather seats instead of the standard leatherette, as well as multi-contour front seats and a reversing camera.

Optional Features
BMW offers numerous options for the 2014 BMW X5. Items that are standard for the xDrive50i can be added to other X5 variants at extra cost, and two Interior Design packages are available, adding premium Nappa leather, an extended leather treatment, and upgraded wood trim in Ivory White and Mocha Brown color schemes.

Additionally, BMW will install a choice between a Harman Kardon and a 1,200-watt Bang & Olufsen audio system in the new X5. Extra-cost upgrades also include adaptive LED headlights, automatic high-beam headlights, power soft-close doors, Comfort Access passive entry and push-button starting, a 4-zone automatic climate control system, and a rear-seat entertainment system with table-style monitors.

Several safety and technology options are offered for the 2014 BMW X5, and are discussed in the sections that follow.

Under the Hood
For 2014, the BMW X5 is offered with a choice of three engines. The rear-wheel-drive X5 sDrive35i and the all-wheel-drive X5 xDrive35i are equipped with a turbocharged, 3.0-liter inline 6-cylinder engine generating 300 horsepower and 300 lb.-ft. of torque, the latter available between 1,200 and 5,000 rpm.

Starting during the first quarter of 2014, the X5 xDrive35d will be available, equipped with a turbocharged, 3.0-liter inline 6-cylinder diesel engine. It produces 255 horsepower and 413 lb.-ft. of torque, and the torque is on tap from 1,500 to 3,000 rpm. BMW promises "significant improvements in efficiency" with the diesel engine.

The X5 xDrive50i has a twin-turbocharged, 4.4-liter V-8 engine that is more powerful than that installed in the 2013 version, adding 45 horsepower and 30 lb.-ft. of torque compared with last year's model. The result: 445 horsepower peaking from 5,500 rpm to 6,000 rpm, and 480 lb.-ft. of torque available between 2,000 rpm and 4,500 rpm. BMW says this engine, which accelerates the X5 to 60 mph in 4.9 seconds by the automaker's stopwatch, will demonstrate "significant efficiency gains."

Each engine is paired with a new 8-speed automatic transmission, with a Sport Automatic transmission with paddle shifters and Launch Control available as an option. BMW EfficientDynamics technologies are also standard, including automatic start/stop for the engine, electric steering, and brake-energy regeneration. Via the Driving Dynamics Control system, the X5's driver can tailor the vehicle to Comfort, Sport, Sport+, or Eco Pro driving modes, the latter of which is designed to maximize fuel economy.

An active steering option is available for the new X5, along with a Dynamic Handling package containing Dynamic Performance Control, Dynamic Damper Control, Active Roll Stabilization, and a rear air suspension.

Safety
Every 2014 BMW X5 is equipped with a free 10-year subscription to BMW Assist eCall services, including Automatic Collision Notification. This feature activates when the air bags deploy, helping to put the X5's occupants in touch with people who can help speed assistance. Additionally, the X5's Automatic Collision Notification system employs an Urgency Algorithm, which transmits additional data that can help rescuers understand what they will encounter upon arrival at the vehicle.

A new Active Driving Assistant package is offered for 2014, including Active Blind Spot Detection, lane-departure warning, and a pedestrian- and collision-warning system. The latter operates at speeds below 37 mph, identifies when another vehicle or a pedestrian has become an obstacle, and attempts to get the driver's attention before autonomously applying the brakes to reduce impact force.

Technology
The 2014 BMW X5 is equipped with standard BMW Apps technology for iPhone users, and the BMW ConnectedDrive services includes a vehicle locator that can supply Last Mile walking instructions to the X5 if the owner has become lost. Additional technology options include a full-color Heads Up Display, a 360-degree Surround View Camera with Panorama View, and a BMW Night Vision system.

Autonomous driving upgrades take the form of a next-generation version of BMW Parking Assistant, which can find and measure an empty parking space, and then maneuver the X5 into a parallel parking space without requiring any driver input. The new X5 is also offered with an Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go system, and when paired with the Active Driving Assistant package, can brake the car to a stop to avoid a collision, even if the driver takes no action, according to BMW. Shortly after the X5 goes on sale, a Traffic Jam Assistant system will maintain a safe following distance to traffic ahead while keeping the X5 centered in its lane. The Traffic Jam Assistant works at speeds below 25 mph.
