Each of the following models (listed in alphabetical order) meets all three of the following criteria: 2012 model; designated a "Top Safety Pick" by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety; received a 5-star overall crash-test rating from the NHTSA. For each, we highlight specific standard or optional safety features.

2012 BMW 528i/535i (without xDrive): Optional safety features include Night Vision with Pedestrian Detection system, active blind-spot warning and lane-departure warning systems, and Frontal Collision Warning with Brake Standby. The 5 Series comes standard with 4 free years of Automatic Crash Notification service.

2012 Buick LaCrosse: Six months of Advanced Crash Response service is standard. Options include a blind-spot warning system, reversing camera, reverse parking sensors, and rear-seat side-impact air bags.

2012 Buick Regal: Standard OnStar telematics includes 6 free months of Advanced Crash Response service. Rear park-assist sensors and rear-seat side-impact air bags are optional.

2012 Cadillac CTS: OnStar Advanced Crash Response service is free for the first year. Additionally, the CTS is available with rear park-assist sensors, reversing camera, and adaptive headlights that swivel to help see around dark corners.

2012 Chevrolet Volt: Eight air bags are standard on the Volt, as well as 5 free years of OnStar Automatic Crash Notification service. A reversing camera and rear park-assist sensors are optional.

2012 Chrysler 300: Every Chrysler 300 for 2012 is equipped with 7 air bags and a braking system with rain-brake support and ready-alert brake support. Adaptive headlights, forward collision warning, blind-spot warning, rear cross-path detection, reversing camera, and front and rear parking sensors are available.

2012 Dodge Charger: In addition to 7 standard air bags, the Charger is equipped with rain-brake support and ready-alert brake support. Options include a reversing camera, front and rear park-assist sensors, adaptive headlights, forward collision and blind-spot warning system, and rear cross-path detection.

2012 Nissan Leaf: Aside from a reversing camera, offered only on the SL trim level, the Leaf sticks with the basics: ABS with brake assist, stability control, and 6 air bags.

2012 Volvo S60: City Safety automatic braking and adaptive taillights are standard, and the S60 can be optioned with a reversing camera, drowsy-driver detection, blind-spot monitoring, lane-departure warning, forward collision warning with pedestrian detection, front and rear parking sensors, and a front blind-view 180-degree camera.
