By: Jeff Youngs, 11/12/2013
This list of the safest 2013 pickup trucks, presented in alphabetical order, includes any model that received a 4-star or 5-star overall crash-test rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), or a "Top Safety Pick" designation from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). Two of the trucks earn both designations. Specific standard or optional safety features are highlighted below.
2013 Chevrolet Silverado 1500
According to the NHTSA, all versions of the 2013 Silverado 1500 receive a 4-star overall crash-test rating. The Silverado 1500 is equipped with standard trailer sway control and hill-start assist, and Chevy offers a reversing camera, rear park-assist sensors, and OnStar with Automatic Crash Response service for the Silverado 1500. Automatic Crash Response works with an active subscription to OnStar service, helping to speed rescue following a collision.
2013 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD Crew Cab
To qualify for a 4-star overall crash-test rating from the NHTSA, the 2013 Silverado 2500HD Crew Cab must be equipped with the optional side-impact and side-curtain air bags. Additional options for this truck include OnStar with Automatic Crash Response, rear park-assist sensors, and a reversing camera. Trailer sway control, hill-start assist, and something Chevrolet refers to as proactive roll avoidance are standard.
2013 Ford F-150
The 2013 F-150 achieves a 4-star overall crash-test rating with each cab style. Additionally, the crew cab models are called a "Top Safety Pick" by the IIHS. Standard safety gear includes roll stability control, trailer sway control, and an SOS Post Crash Alert system. A reversing camera and rear park-assist sensors are optional, along with Sync connectivity and 911 Assist service, which works any time a paired smartphone is aboard the truck. The 911 Assist service can speed rescuers to the scene of an accident following an air bag deployment.
2013 Ford F-250 Crew Cab
Based on crash tests performed by the NHTSA, the F-250 SuperCrew earns a 4-star overall rating. Six air bags are standard for this truck, along with trailer sway control, roll stability control, and an SOS Post Crash Alert System. Commercial owners can use the available Crew Chief telematics system to monitor seat belt usage and vehicle speed from a remote location. A reversing camera and rear park-assist sensors are also options.
2013 GMC Sierra 1500
Based on NHTSA crash tests, all versions of the GMC Sierra 1500 earn a 4-star overall crash-test rating. This truck comes standard with hill-start assist and trailer sway control. Options include OnStar with Automatic Crash Response, a reversing camera, and rear park-assist sensors.
2013 GMC Sierra 2500HD Crew Cab
Only Sierra 2500HD Crew Cabs equipped with the optional side-impact and side-curtain air bags earn a 4-star overall crash-test rating from the NHTSA. Hill-start assist, proactive roll-avoidance technology, and trailer sway control are standard for the Sierra 2500HD, while options include rear park-assist sensors, a reversing camera, and OnStar telematics with Automatic Crash Response.
2013 Honda Ridgeline
According to the IIHS, the 2013 Ridgeline is a "Top Safety Pick." Every Ridgeline is equipped with a windshield wiper de-icer grid and a reversing camera. Rear park-assist sensors are optional.
2013 Ram 1500
The updated 2013 Ram 1500 pickup earns a 4-star overall crash-test rating, according to the NHTSA. Trailer sway control and hill-start assist are standard equipment, and the Ram 1500 can be upgraded with Uconnect smartphone pairing technology that includes 911 emergency services capability, rain-sensing wipers, and SmartBeam headlights.
2013 Toyota Tacoma
With a 4-star overall crash-test rating from the NHTSA, the 2013 Tacoma is one of this year's safest pickup trucks. All Tacomas have Smart Stop technology, which is designed to make it impossible for the truck to accelerate if the brake pedal is pressed. Options include trailer sway control, hill-start assist, Downhill Assist Control, and a reversing camera.
2013 Toyota Tundra
A rarity in the segment, matched only by the Ford F-150, the 2013 Toyota Tundra receives a 4-star overall crash-test rating from the NHTSA and, in crew cab format, a "Top Safety Pick" rating from the IIHS. Knee air bags are standard for both front-seat occupants, and the Tundra is equipped with trailer sway control and Smart Stop technology designed to eliminate the possibility of accelerating while the brake pedal is pressed. A reversing camera is optional, along with front and rear park-assist sensors.
