Safest 2013 Vans

6/18/2013
Minivans are frequently used to transport families, and safety is an important consideration when choosing one. Listed below, in alphabetical order, are the vans that receive either a 4-star or 5-star overall crash-test rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), or a "Top Safety Pick" rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). One van model gets both a 5-star NHTSA rating and an IIHS "Top Safety Pick" designation. Safety equipment highlights are also provided.

2013 Chrysler Town & Country
The Chrysler Town & Country earns a 4-star overall crash-test rating from the NHTSA. A trailer sway control system is standard for 2013, joining a knee air bag for the driver and a reversing camera on all versions of the Town & Country. Options include rain-sensing wipers, SmartBeam headlights, rear park-assist sensors, rear cross-path detection system, and a blind-spot information system.

2013 Dodge Grand Caravan
Like its corporate twin, the Chrysler Town & Country, the 2013 Grand Caravan achieves a 4-star overall crash-test rating from the NHTSA. Standard equipment includes a knee air bag for the driver and a trailer sway control system. A reversing camera and rear park-assist sensors are optional, as well as a blind-spot monitoring system, rear cross-path detection system, SmartBeam headlights, and rain-sensing wipers.

2013 Honda Odyssey
The 2013 Odyssey is the only minivan to receive a 5-star overall crash-test rating, and is the only minivan to earn a "Top Safety Pick" designation from the IIHS. It comes standard with a reversing camera, and can be optioned with rear park-assist sensors and a blind-spot information system.

2013 Toyota Sienna
Having achieved a 4-star overall crash-test rating from the NHTSA, the Sienna is among the safest minivans for 2013. A knee air bag for the driver, a wiper de-icer grid, and Smart Stop technology are standard, the latter designed to make it impossible for the van to accelerate if the brake pedal is pressed. A reversing camera and rear park-assist sensors are available for the 2013 Sienna, along with rain-sensing wipers, a blind-spot information system, and a dynamic radar cruise control system with a Pre-Collision System, which is designed to ready the vehicle's safety systems for an unavoidable impact. The Sienna can also be optioned with Safety Connect telematics service, which includes an SOS Emergency Assistance button and Automatic Crash Notification.
