Top-Rated 2013 Coupes: Initial Quality

6/19/2013
Every year for more than 25 years, J.D. Power has conducted an industry-standard study of vehicle buyers who have owned their new vehicle for at least 90 days. Called the Initial Quality Study (IQS), this study measures what has gone right and what has gone wrong with new vehicles during the first 3 months of ownership, establishing a long-standing benchmark for vehicle quality in terms of vehicle system breakdowns and malfunctions, as well as identifying vehicle systems that are difficult to understand and to use. Based on the results of the 2013 IQS, the five coupes listed in alphabetical order below receive the top rating.

2013 Chevrolet Camaro
In addition to introducing a new Camaro ZL1 Convertible and a new 1LE Performance ackage for the Camaro SS Coupe, Chevrolet updates the 2013 Camaro with a color touch-screen radio and Chevrolet MyLink smartphone pairing technology, redesigned wheels, and numerous smaller changes. Coupe and convertible models continue, with a choice between V-6, V-8, and supercharged V-8 engines.

2013 Ford Mustang
Available in coupe and convertible body styles, the 2013 Mustang is restyled and the Mustang GT version adds more performance this year. The most substantial changes are brought to the high-performance Shelby GT500 version, which gets a new supercharged, 5.8-liter V-8 engine generating 662 horsepower. All of the Shelby's mechanicals are fortified to handle the extra power. This is the last year for the Mustang Boss 302 model.

2013 Honda Civic
Though the Civic Coupe was redesigned for 2012, Honda makes substantial changes to the 2013 version, strengthening the underlying structure, upgrading the car's dynamic tuning, and adding standard equipment including new Smart Vent side-impact air bags, Bluetooth with streaming music capability, Internet radio access, SMS text messaging, and a USB connection. The 2013 Civic Coupe is sold in standard LX, popular EX, leather-lined EX-L, and performance-oriented Si trim levels.

2013 Porsche 911
Redesigned for the 2012 model year, the 2013 Porsche 911 continues in coupe and convertible body styles while the lineup expands to include all-wheel-drive Carrera 4 and Turbo variants, as well as the track-ready GT3 model. New safety technology also debuts this year, and the Carrera Coupe is offered with a new glass sunroof.

2013 Smart Fortwo
In the 2013 Initial Quality Study's new City Car category, the 2013 Fortwo is the top-ranked model. Tall in height and short in length, the Smart Fortwo is a rear-wheel-drive car equipped with a 70-horsepower, 3-cylinder engine that's tucked under the floor behind the two seats. An electric drivetrain with an estimated range of 60 miles is also available, and Smart sells the Fortwo in both coupe and convertible body styles.
