BMW Concept X5 eDrive Arrives in Frankfurt

8/28/2013
At the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show, BMW will unveil the second of its concept vehicles designed to showcase the automaker's BMW eDrive plug-in hybrid powertrain. The new BMW Concept X5 eDrive, which is based on the redesigned 2014 BMW X5, pairs the plug-in hybrid powertrain with the automaker's xDrive all-wheel-drive (AWD) system for the first time.

Compatible with household electrical outlets, home charging stations, and public charging stations, the BMW Concept X5 eDrive's plug-in powertrain is comprised of a turbocharged 4-cylinder gasoline engine, 70-kW electric motor, and a Lithium-ion battery installed underneath the cargo area floor at what is reported to be a slight penalty in terms of cargo space. The powertrain supplies motive force to all four of the X5 eDrive's wheels through the xDrive AWD system, which includes variable torque distribution technology.

Three driving modes are available: electric vehicle (EV), Hybrid, and Save Battery. In EV mode, the BMW Concept X5 eDrive is designed to travel up to 19 miles at speeds up to 75 mph on electricity alone. In Hybrid mode, the electric motor and battery serve to assist the turbocharged 4-cylinder gasoline engine. Working together, they deliver acceleration to 60 mph in fewer than 7 seconds, according to BMW. In Save Battery mode, the driver operates the X5 eDrive solely using the gasoline engine, saving the battery for EV use in the city or in urban zones where it might be required.

The Concept X5 eDrive includes a Driving Experience Control system with an Eco Pro powertrain mode. Eco Pro is engaged as a default in order to maximize the SUV's efficiency. Additional features include Proactive Driving Assist technology, which uses the navigation system to plot the most efficient route and show where public charging stations are located, and a smartphone app that allows the owner to remotely monitor and program vehicle charging, as well as pre-condition the cabin with heat or air conditioning prior to driving.

In Frankfurt, the BMW Concept X5 eDrive wears Silverflake Metallic paint and features BMW i Blue accents. Special roof rails and 21-inch aluminum wheels are designed to reduce aerodynamic drag, and the charging connector is illuminated while the X5 eDrive is recharging.

BMW has made no official announcements about a possible production version of the X5 eDrive.
