Recall Roundup: Sporty Cars and Sports Cars are Going Back to Dealers for Various Problems

3/4/2013
This week, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced three recall campaigns for sporty cars and sports cars. The largest pertains to the 2012 Hyundai Veloster equipped with a panoramic sunroof. Hyundai is expanding a previous recall for this problem, adding an additional 6,071 Velosters built between July 4, 2011, and October 31, 2011. According to Hyundai, the sunroof assembly may have been weakened during installation at the factory, and the sunroof could break while the vehicle is in motion, potentially causing a crash and/or personal injury to vehicle occupants.

Hyundai dealers will inspect and, if necessary, replace the sunroof at no charge. The recall begins March 2013, and concerned owners can contact Hyundai at 1-800-633-5151 and reference Hyundai recall campaign number 108. The NHTSA Campaign ID number for this recall is 13V051000.

Porsche is recalling 2,263 examples of the redesigned 911 Carrera and 911 Carrera 4 models from the 2012 and 2013 model years. The affected versions are equipped with the standard exhaust system, not the optional sports exhaust system, and include a tailpipe that could fracture and separate from the vehicle's muffler, creating a road hazard for other motorists. The recalled vehicles were built between March 7, 2012, and November 12, 2012.

Porsche has not established a start date for inspecting and replacing the exhaust system, but concerned owners can contact the automaker by calling 1-800-767-7243. The Porsche recall number is AD01, and the NHTSA Campaign ID number is 13V058000.

Finally, Lotus is recalling its 2007 and 2008 Elise and Exige models. Built between December 1, 2006, and October 31, 2007, 451 examples of the cars may be equipped with an oil cooler line that could become detached from its fitting, spraying oil throughout the engine compartment and increasing the risk of a fire. Dealers will replace the oil cooler hose fittings and the entire lateral oil cooler hose at no charge. The recall began March 4.

Lotus owners can call the company at 1-800-245-6887 with questions. The Lotus recall number is 2013/01R, and the NHTSA Campaign ID number is 13V041000.
