Cadillac's Redesigned 2014 CTS Honored as Motor Trend Car of the Year

This past week, Motor Trend, a magazine for automotive enthusiasts, named the redesigned Cadillac CTS as its Car of the Year for 2014, just as the third-generation 2014 model is about to be delivered to dealer showrooms. The magazine's editor-in-chief Ed Loh said in a statement that judges were impressed by the sedan's "responsive powertrains, smooth ride and sporty handling." The second-generation CTS sedan also received the car award in 2008.

To become one of seven finalists in this year's competition, 22 all-new or substantially upgraded 2014 models were put through a battery of performance tests to measure acceleration, braking, and handling on three separate courses. Each vehicle was driven on a real-world road loop with a range of road surfaces in various traffic conditions.

The award process includes 10 days of testing, driving, and evaluation where judges examine each vehicle and assess six factors: design advancement; engineering excellence; efficiency (fuel); safety; value; and performance of intended function.

In addition to the Cadillac CTS, car finalists this year were: BMW 4 Series; Chevrolet Corvette; Jaguar F-Type; Kia Forte; Mazda 3; Mazda 6; and Mercedes-Benz S-Class.

The 2014 Cadillac CTS is equipped with a standard 2.0-liter, turbocharged 4-cylinder engine that produces 272 horsepower and is rated by the EPA to return 20 miles per gallon (mpg) in city driving and 30 mpg on the highway. A 321-horspower V-6 engine is also offered in addition to an all-new 3.6-liter twin-turbo V-6 that generates 420 horsepower.

The 2014 CTS is Cadillac's first model to feature an 8-speed automatic transmission. Suggested retail pricing for the 2014 CTS begins at $46,025, including a $925 destination charge.

During the first 10 months of 2013, sales of the current CTS model were 26,483 vs. 40,809 a year ago, according to manufacturer-reported sales data tracked by J.D. Power.  Cadillac brand sales in the United States increased nearly 27% from 2012, with a significant sales boost from the addition of the ATS premium compact sedan.
