Mitsubishi Expands Subcompact Car Class with New 2014 Mirage

4/3/2013
Mitsubishi made news at the 2013 New York International Auto Show by introducing the 2014 Mirage, a new subcompact 5-door hatchback perfect for urban dwellers. Based on the automaker's fuel-economy estimates, the 2014 Mitsubishi Mirage will be "the most fuel-efficient non-hybrid gasoline vehicle available in America."

Equipped with a 1.2-liter 3-cylinder engine generating 74 horsepower and 74 lb.-ft. of torque, the 2014 Mirage is expected to get 37 mpg in the city, 44 mpg on the highway, and 40 mpg in combined driving when equipped with the optional continuously variable transmission (CVT) by the manufacturer. A 5-speed manual gearbox is standard. Mitsubishi is clear, however, that the EPA has not published official fuel-economy numbers for the new Mirage.

Mitsubishi refers to the Mirage as "stylish," and the car is equipped with standard body-color exterior trim, rear spoiler, and a 0.28 coefficient of drag, the latter of which helps the Mirage achieve its lofty fuel-economy estimates. Two versions will be offered, the Mirage DE and the Mirage ES.

The base model, the Mirage DE, is equipped with electric steering, variable intermittent windshield wipers, 7 air bags, anti-lock brakes with brake assist, traction control, and stability control. Inside, the Mirage DE has piano black interior trim, a 60/40 split-folding rear seat, and a 140-watt stereo system with a CD/MP3 player, USB port, and 4 speakers. This trim level also includes power windows with automatic one-touch operation for the driver window, power exterior mirrors, power door locks, remote keyless entry with a panic alarm, and a tilt steering wheel. An automatic climate control system is standard, too.

The 2014 Mitsubishi Mirage ES is equipped with 14-inch aluminum wheels, fog lights, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob. Bluetooth connectivity, cruise control, steering wheel controls for the stereo, and a FAST-Key passive entry system with push-button starting are also standard on the Mirage ES.

Both models will have a standard 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty, 5-year/60,000-mile standard warranty, and free roadside assistance for the first 5 years of ownership, regardless of mileage. Options for the 2014 Mirage include a continuously variable transmission (CVT) with hill-start assist, navigation system, reversing camera, rear park-assist sensors, LED interior lighting, sporty lower body kit, and chrome trim.

Mitsubishi expects the new 2014 Mirage to appear in dealer showrooms in the fall of 2013.
