2014 Kia Sedona Keeps Koreans in Minivan Market

5/6/2013
Kia did not sell its Sedona minivan for the 2013 model year. The assumption was that the family hauler, which had been in showrooms for seven years without a redesign, had been discontinued after 2012. Industry rumors insisted that the Sedona nameplate would be resurrected on a large 3-row crossover. After all, what better than an SUV upon which to affix a name synonymous with Arizona red-rock country?

Apparently, a minivan is better. The Kia Sedona returns for 2014, and the now 9-year-old design offers a short list of improvements. The 2014 Sedona is equipped with a redesigned grille, restyled front bumper, LED positioning lights, standard fog lights, and a new aluminum wheel design. Inside, the Sedona includes a new storage console designed to hold tablet computers. Kia also makes leather upholstery, heated front seats, and an automatic climate control system standard for the Sedona EX for the 2014 model year. Option packages are restructured for 2014, and the minivan's rear-seat entertainment system, formerly offered only for the EX trim level, is no longer available.

Otherwise, the 2014 Sedona is basically the same vehicle that debuted back in 2006. A 3.5-liter V-6 engine generates 269 horsepower, powering the front wheels through a 6-speed automatic transmission with Sportmatic manual shifting. Fuel-economy estimates, according to the EPA, are 17 mpg in the city, 24 mpg on the highway, and 20 mpg in combined driving.

In terms of safety, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has not assessed the 2014 Sedona's crashworthiness, but gives the minivan a 4-star (out of 5) rollover resistance rating. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has not rated the 2014 Sedona, but the structurally identical 2012 model received the best rating of "Good" in the moderate offset frontal impact, side-impact, and the rear-impact injury prevention tests. In the roof crush strength test, the 2012 Sedona received a "Poor" rating.

The 2014 Kia Sedona LX is priced at $26,750, including the $850 destination charge. The upscale Sedona EX starts at $31,750. Kia did not provide a date upon which the 2014 Sedona would be available to customers.
