Redesigned 2015 Volvo XC90 Points Toward Automaker's Future

As the first Volvo model designed and developed after China's Geely purchased the brand from Ford Motor Company, the all-new 2015 XC90 represents a turning point for the iconic Swedish brand and signals the path Volvo will follow in years to come. From its design themes and details to its expanded portfolio of autonomous driving technologies, the new XC90 is designed for the future.

"This is one of the most important days in our history. We are not just launching a car, but re-launching our brand," said Håkan Samuelsson, president and CEO of Volvo Car Group. "The XC90 paves the way for a portfolio of exciting new cars to come in the following years."

Built upon Volvo's new Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) technology, which will underpin the automaker's future cars and SUVs, the new XC90 is equipped with a turbocharged and supercharged 4-cylinder engine from the company's Drive-E family of fuel-efficient put powerful engines. In the XC90 T6 AWD, it makes 316 horsepower. In the XC90 T8 AWD, which Volvo touts as the world's first 7-passenger plug-in hybrid, an electric drive motor boosts output to 400 horsepower while supplying up to 25 miles of electric range.

According to Volvo, the XC90's cabin represents the "epitome of Scandinavian luxury." New seat designs are said to offer traditional Volvo comfort combined with new energy-absorbing safety features, and depending on where occupants are sitting they'll enjoy available heating, ventilation, and massage functions. An integrated child safety booster seat is offered for the middle position of the second row, the safest spot in the vehicle.

Speaking of safety, Volvo claims the new XC90 is equipped with the most comprehensive and technologically sophisticated standard safety package available in the automotive industry. New automatic braking, spine protection, whiplash protection, rear-impact protection, rollover protection, and run-off-road protection systems are offered for the new XC90, and the SUV is also available with a range of modern safety features.

A new tablet-style infotainment screen mounted in the center of the dashboard and supplemented by adaptive digital instrumentation and a head-up display replaces traditional controls. The system includes navigation, is compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto platforms, and features infrared technology that makes the touch screen responsive when the user is wearing gloves. A 19-speaker, 1,400-watt premium sound system is optional.

Every new XC90 is equipped with leather seats, wood cabin trim, and a gearshift lever made of crystal glass. A power panoramic sunroof is standard, and a 4-zone automatic climate control system is optional, along with an adaptive cruise control system and Park Assist Pilot technologies.

The XC90 T6 AWD starts at $48,900, but the first batch of XC90s to roll off the assembly line will be First Edition versions priced at $65,900. All are painted Onyx Black and include 21-in. aluminum wheels, Amber premium leather, Charcoal leather-wrapped dashboard, walnut wood inlays, heated and ventilated front seats, heated second-row seats, the high-powered premium audio system, and more.

Volvo is selling the First Edition only online, starting at 10 a.m. EST on September 3.
